Instead, save it to the hard disk, then follow the instructions for feeding it to the router. The Linksys installation disk should have the right software on it to accomplish this. Unless you can set the Netgear device up to be just a Wireless Access Point (WAP) and disable all of the router functionality, I would take the Netgear device back and buy an actual Wireless Access Point. The reason for this is that by using another router on your LAN, you will have a condition where devices connected to the second router will be inaccessible from devices connected to your first router.

To extend the range, you would run cat5e cable to the remote part of your house to connect your Linksys router to your WAP. This will allow the WAP to be connected to your LAN and extend the reach of your wireless network.

You will want to use the same SSID for the WAP, but use a different channel. If your Linksys is using channel 6, then choose either channel 1 or 11 for your WAP.

A. Wired, you'll need the Wii's USB Ethernet Adapter.

Wireless, if the WRT54G2 is anything like the old WRT54G, you can get into the router configuration by pointing your web browser to "http://192.168.1.1". Older versions of the router's default password was "admin" with no username to get in, check your manual to see if it's the same. In the router configuration, there should be a "Wireless" and "Wireless Security" tab. Security mode should be "WEP", enter a passphrase, and click Generate, the 4 Keys should populate. Copy the first key onto a piece of paper. Power up the Wii, get into the Network configuration, have it connect to your router and enter the key when prompted. That should be it.

I have an older WRT54G with third-party firmware so hopefully my instructions are similar enough to get by.

You will want to use the same SSID for the WAP, but use a different channel. If your Linksys is using channel 6, then choose either channel 1 or 11 for your WAP.

How do i install router firmware?

Q. Alright, i have no clue how to install the latest firmware into my Linksys router. i get the update that its ready to be downloaded, but then i get a message saying "Windows cannot open this file". The file is a .bin file, and i have no idea past this point how to open it. Any help?

A. Just before you download the file, there should be a dialog box asking what you want to do with it. Don't let Windows try to open the file. Instead, save it to the hard disk, then follow the instructions for feeding it to the router. The Linksys installation disk should have the right software on it to accomplish this. If you installed it correctly, it should already be available.
