How do i install router firmware?

Q. Alright, i have no clue how to install the latest firmware into my Linksys router. i get the update that its ready to be downloaded, but then i get a message saying "Windows cannot open this file". The file is a .bin file, and i have no idea past this point how to open it. Any help?

A. Just before you download the file, there should be a dialog box asking what you want to do with it. Don't let Windows try to open the file. Instead, save it to the hard disk, then follow the instructions for feeding it to the router. The Linksys installation disk should have the right software on it to accomplish this. If you installed it correctly, it should already be available.

Hope that helps.

Is it possible to use a LinkSys router as a network adapter?
Q. Is it possible to use my LinkSys router as a wireless network adapter for my Xbox 360. If I can I would like step-by-step instructions if possible.

A. You can do that so long as the router you use is compatible with dd-wrt firmware. Not all Linksys routers are. The WRT-54G is a good cheap one to use. It's fairly easy to do. Just flash your router with dd-wrt firmware and enable the wireless bridge mode. There are plenty of step by step tutorials online.

How to set up linksys router for playing xbox online?
Q. I have a linksys wrt54g2 and every 4 or so hours I lose connection to the Internet. Then the Internet doesn't work unless I unplug the router and plug it back in. I have gotten tired of unplugging the router. I have unplugged the router and just left the modem in and it worked fine so it's not the ISP.

A. flash the firmware to the router ... see if that's the problem... or maybe you just have a shoddy router.

Can I use a Linksys router as a wireless adapter to connect to my existing wireless network?
Q. I have an existing wireless network, My computer, and Xbox 360 were running off it. Every xbox wireless adapter I purchase has broken. I have an extra linksys router and am curious if I can configure it to act as an adapter on my existing network.

A. Along with the information that Dave provided this may also be useful. Check out modifying the firmware of the linksys router. If it's a WRT54G (and other models) there's an open source software package available that'll change the software on the router to give you better control of the bridge. I do warn you, however, that this *could* "brick" (make it useless, like a brick/paperweight) your router if you do it incorrectly. You could have this up and running within a half an hour or so depending on your skill level if you're willing to try it. I've used it quite a few times (7-8) without any problems.
