Connecting two routers on the same home network?

Q. I have a linksys wrt160nv2 with stock firmware and netgear wnr834b with dd-wrt firmware. My linksys is my main router and want to use my netgear to extend my range. Can someone tell me step by step on how to do this? Thanks

A. Unless you can set the Netgear device up to be just a Wireless Access Point (WAP) and disable all of the router functionality, I would take the Netgear device back and buy an actual Wireless Access Point. The reason for this is that by using another router on your LAN, you will have a condition where devices connected to the second router will be inaccessible from devices connected to your first router.

To extend the range, you would run cat5e cable to the remote part of your house to connect your Linksys router to your WAP. This will allow the WAP to be connected to your LAN and extend the reach of your wireless network.

You will want to use the same SSID for the WAP, but use a different channel. If your Linksys is using channel 6, then choose either channel 1 or 11 for your WAP.

How to make a wireless router a wireless reciever?
Q. I was wondering how to make it so that my wireless router could receive wireless signals. Also do u know any good wireless firmware for a linksys router.

A. DD-WRT is one firmware that can change many routers to "client" boxes. (depends on model)

How do I make my internet run faster through the router?
Q. I just updated my firmware on my linksys wireless router and ever since my internet has been much much slower. I have been continuously getting signed out of xbox live, and sometimes it is so slow that I can't even connect to live at all even though I have a straight ethernet cable connection. Any suggestions anyone??

How do i install router firmware?
Q. Alright, i have no clue how to install the latest firmware into my Linksys router. i get the update that its ready to be downloaded, but then i get a message saying "Windows cannot open this file". The file is a .bin file, and i have no idea past this point how to open it. Any help?

A. Just before you download the file, there should be a dialog box asking what you want to do with it. Don't let Windows try to open the file. Instead, save it to the hard disk, then follow the instructions for feeding it to the router. The Linksys installation disk should have the right software on it to accomplish this. If you installed it correctly, it should already be available.

Hope that helps.
