Is there a way to change internet password on a linksys wrt54g?

Q. My friend a has a Linksys WRT54G wireless internet and I want to change the password to his wireless internet, but I can't figure out the password. I have a ethernet cable but I still cannot login without knowing the password when I type in the url 192.168.1.1.

Is there a way to bypass that or figure it out again? I don't want to reset the whole thing cause it's not mine.

A. you need to ask his password. also it depend if your friends lives in the same house as you cause linksys wireless is not a satelight that you can connect from anywhere

What is wrong with my Linksys wrt54g router?
Q. Yesterday the power to my house went off and came back up in a second or so. But after that my Linksys wrt54g router would not send out signal to the house. I have held down the reset button on the back and unpluged and plugged it back up. And It still will not send out the signal but the modem that its connected to is getting internet because I ran an ethernet cable from the modem to my laptop and its working fine.

A. I had that happen to me a couple years ago. I had the same router.
It destroyed the router. (Never damaged the modem) The router would not work anymore. I just went to wal-mart and got a new router. If you have had the router less than a year you can call tech support and it wont cost anything.

How can I get my Linksys WRT54G router to work again?
Q. I was attempting to change the channel on my Linksys WRT54G, but I forgot my password, so I performed a reset and ever since then, I haven't been able to reconnect to the internet through my server. I've tried running the software that came with the router to no avail. I keep getting error messages. I don't recall specifically what the messages were, but they were along the lines of "Can't configure the router. Press the reset button." But it never works. What can I do to get it back? I need it for my TiVo and my Wii!

A. Try to get in to your router page again. Just launch Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.1. The username is <blank> and the password is "admin". If you're using a DSL connection, look for internet connection type and change it to PPPOE. Type in the username and password provided by your ISP. If you don't know what it is contact your ISP.

If you're using a cable connection, under <Setup> click on the subcategory <MAC Address Clone>. Click on <Enable> and then click on clone your PC's MAC. Then click on <Save Settings>.

If these steps does not work, turn off your modem, unplug the router from the power and turn off the computer as well (the one directly connected to the router. After powering off everything, wait for 20 seconds and then turn on the modem first. Wait for the lights to go stable and then power up the router, wait for 15 seconds then turn on the computer.

If this still won't work try to call up linksys.

Is a Linksys WRT54G router compatible with a Windows 8 computer?
Q. I want to buy a Linksys WRT54G router. The tech info says it is compatible with Windows XP and Vista. Is it incompatible with Windows 8 ?

A. A router does not require software.

Many routers come with a wizard setup program that runs on specific operating systems.

You do not need to use the wizard to configure the router. The router is configured using any Internet browser from any OS.

Download the manual if you don't have one. http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/WRT54G

Connect a PC or laptop via Ethernet to one of the router's LAN ports and follow the instructions in the manual to set it up.

If you don't know the login password you'll have to reset the router to factory default state. The instructions and default password will also be in the manual.

You can reconfigure your wireless settings. Be sure to change the default password for security.

Wireless connections require configuration to prevent anyone with a WiFi in range of your router from connecting to your network. They could do malicious deeds, such as hack into your network, or just leech off of your Internet bandwidth.

Wireless setup is not too difficult, Just follow the instructions in the manual. If you're having problems either pay someone to set it up for you or find a knowledgeable friend to configure it. Once the wireless network settings are configured it's a fairly trouble-free system.

Once it's setup you can disconnect the Ethernet cable and use the wireless connection.

Good Luck...

Blinking Power Indicating Light on my Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Router?
Q. Recently I noticed that the indicating light of my Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Router started blinking & the said router stops working. What is this trying to tell me? I asked Linksys but since my router is out of warranty there is a fee for tech support but said that it might be that the firmware is corrupted. How can I rectify/update the firmware when the router is not working?
Thanks.

A. You have no connection to the router at all?

The reset button is located on the rear and is recessed slighly into the back of the router. With the power ON, using a pin, push and hold the reset button until all the lights start flashing or, lights start flashing other then the current. Then, unplug the router for 30 seconds and power it back up.

If the light no longer flashes, then your problem will most like have been resolved. Attempt connection from your computers to the router/internet.

If the light continues to flash, connect a computer to the router using an ethernet cable; you obviously can't do this wirelessly. Once you are connected with an ethernet cable, click on Start, and then click Run, and in the textfield type cmd and press enter. At the command prompt, type ipconfig and press enter. Your computer will reply with a few lines of information. The line of interest is the one that reads "Default Gateway." It should read 192.168.1.1 .

IF IT DOES READ 192.168.1.1 then you will be able to update the firmware. First, you will need to get an updated firmware file. Once obtained, open your web browser, type http://192.168.1.1 and press enter. For both user name and password, enter admin . A webpage will appear. Click Administration and once clicked, right below that click Firmware Upgrade. There, you can select the firmware upgrade from your computer.

IF IT DOES NOT READ 192.168.1.1 then Control Panel -> Network Connections (XP) or Network and Sharing Center (Vista & 7). Find your network adapter. Right click it and select properties. There will be a small list of which one line will read "Internet Protocol version 4" or "TCP/IP connection IPv4." DO NOT USE THE IPv6!. Click the line that has version 4/IPv4 and click the properties buttons down and to the right. On the next page will read "acquire an ip address automatically." Select the option below it, "Use the following IP address". For IP Address, enter 192.168.1.5; Subnet Mask, 255.255.255.0; Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1; press OK and OK again. Once completed open your web browser and type http://192.168.1.1. If you are prompted for a username and password, use admin for both. You will then see a webpage. At the top, click "Administration." Once clicked, right below that link click "Firmware Upgrade." Here you can upload the upgrade saved on your computer to your router.

If you are unable to make a connection to your router with the instructions above, time for a new router.

For Firmware Upgrade, go to this page... http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT54GS?referrer=www.linksysbycisco.com and halfway down the page to the right click "Downloads." From there you can proceed in obtaining and downloading your Firmware Upgrade.

How do i enable upnp with my linksys router?
Q. I am trying to enable upnp for my linksys wrt54g router but I can't figure out how to get to router configuration. I tried going to http://192.168.1.1 but i coudln't log in or anything when i did the blank username and admin as password. Can anyone help?

A. Ask the person that set up your router for the password that they set.

If you set it up and didn't set wireless security, then one of your neighbors was more industrious than you and changed the password on you.

You'll have to reset the router to factory defaults and set it up again, but this time in addition to uPnP, also enable wireless security and change the admin password.

How to reset the linksys wrt54gs to original ip address and login information?
Q. I have a new internet address on my router for the internet and i forgot my stuff for the linksys router/bridge that i am using and now i need to restore it and connect it to my current router wirelessly and get the internet on there as well

A. Push a pin or tip of a paperclip inside the small hole at the back of the router. Hold it for at least 15 secs until the power light comes off and back on. That should reset the router to defaults.

Is holding the reset button after a firmware upgrade an important step for a succesfull upgrade?
Q. I have a Linksys WRT54G Version 5 router. I upgraded my firmware a while ago and not long after the routers wireless stopped working. I read on the Linksys website that you should hold the reset button for 30 seconds after an upgrade then unplug the router and plug it back in. Could not holding the reset button after an upgrade cause issues?

A. After a firmware upgrade, even if you reset the router, the latest firmware version will still be present. So it's impossible to undo a fimware upgrade just by resetting it (this is the reason why every manufacturer draws attention to the fact that firmware upgrade must not be interrupted becase you could end up destroying the router). Resetting the router will revert it to the factory defaults, but they refer ONLY to the settings (ip address, routing table, password, encryption or whatever settings you have made) not to the firmware.

Usually a firmware upgrade does not require a general reset. But you must take into account that there are differences between firmware versions and the settings which worked for the previous firmware version might not be compatible with the new version. For instance, Trendnet draws attention to the fact that after a firmware upgrade you will lose all the settings that corresponded to the previous version.

How do i delete a wireless network?
Q. I accidentally set up a wireless network on my router without a password. I can't access that network's settings though because I set up another network after, so I can only change the settings on that one. I have a linksys wrt54g. I tried resetting the security, and that reset the newer network, but the older one without a password is still broadcasting, and my neighbors are still using it. How can i access the settings, or just do a master reset?

A. Once you reset the WRT54G, everything will be seti into factory defaults. If you have an old network and you wanted it to be deleted, you are referring of deleting the preferred networks. Through this, you will remove the old profile or the old network that has been stored on your PC.

If you're using Windows XP Service Pack 2, just click view available wireless networks on the wireless icon at the bottom right side. Look for change the order of preferred networks at the left side and click it. Go to wireless tab. Under it, you will see a preferred networks box. If you see your old network, highlight it and click remove.

Those names under the preferred networks box are the networks you have been connected. Once you connect to a certain network, a profile will be stored and created to the PC that's why after restarting your computer, you still can access the Internet without connecting and typing the network key.

Hope this works!

whenever i put a password on the router it doesnt work?
Q. its a garbage linksys wrt54g. what ends up happening is i put a password on it and if it ever disconnects i cannot reconnect and have to reset the router. theres 3 computers in the house that need access to this router so can someone give me a walk through how to set this thing up with a password and limit access to just these 3 computers without it going haywire.

A. How old is the router? There are a ton of WRT54g router revisions. What is the exact revision number of your router?

There are several ways to limit access to the router.

1. You can limit the number of connections by limiting the number of ip addresses given out by the router. For example, by going into the routers setting by typing 192.168.1.1 and entering username and password, you can find the ip address range and change it so only 3 address are given out. If you were to type in 192.168.1.101 - 192.168.1.103, you would get a max 3 connections. This would be fine unless an unauthorized connection was being made, taking up one of your spots.

2. You can enter each computers MAC address in the MAC address filtering settings, and set to Allow Only. Then no other computers could connect, unless they cloned one of your computers MAC address.

3. The best way is to set the router to its most secure encryption type, which would be wpa2, then enter a passkey that is hard to guess, with numbers, a mix of Cap letters and lowercase letters, and no english words, such as XjGcc665Ty. If the computers are hard wired to the router, then you should shut off wireless completely

When you set the encryption type, your computers wireless adapters must also have the ability to use that type of encryption. If you set the router to WPA2, and one of the computers adapters doesn't even allow for that type of encryption, then it won't connect. You may have to update your drivers for each of the wireless adapters, if in fact you have wireless connections. Again, wired connections are different and don't need passwords. If you reset the router to default, with no password or encyrption, and all 3 CAN connect, and then set encryption then they CANNOT connect, then you have issues with your computers adapters, and not the router.

Some models of the WrT54g can use 3rd party firmware that is far more reliable then Linksys firmware. but chances are you may have a newer version, that cannot.

How do I do a full erasure of a WRT54G Router?
Q. I recently got a Linksys WRT54G Version 2 Router from a friend of mines. What I wanted to know is how do I go about making sure that all of the old and previous settings that may be stored on the router itself are cleared off so that I can start from a fresh firmware? Right now it has HyperWRT 15c Thibor in which I have done a clear nvram and restore default settings through the admininstration, held down the reset button in an attempt that everything resets to default, and also I have power cycled the router itself for a full day. However when I go to setup the connection type (i.e. PPPoE) the previous connection information will pop up, which I do not want happening. I've tried connecting to the router through different PC's throught my house, and the same information remains throught setting up the connection type.

I wanted to know does anyone know of any surefire ways to clear out the entire memory so that I can go with fresh settings and default firmware.

Thank you.

A. you'll have to get the new firmware for the linksys and flash the linksys firmware over the hyperwrt.

Is there a way to get your router username and password without resetting your router?
Q. I have a linksys wrt54g router. I want to get the password and username so i can change the mac address restrictions. I want to obtain this without doing a reset.

A. if the credentials are standard out of the box - you could check its website on what that make/model is set to.

If it has been changed from standard (which is a good idea) - then you will probably have to reset to standard.

Only the manufacturer knows if the previous settings will work with the new firmware version. There might be minor upgrades which don't require resetting the router, but if the manufacturer states that the new firmware needs resetting then you should to this.

Only the manufacturer knows if the previous settings will work with the new firmware version. There might be minor upgrades which don't require resetting the router, but if the manufacturer states that the new firmware needs resetting then you should to this.
