Netgear Faq: Is Time Warner Wireless Router Good

Charles asks…

Which wireless router should I get?

I'm signing up for Time Warner Cable internet service at a rate of 10Mbps. I have to buy my own wireless router so I wanted to know what router spec I'll need. Will 802.11 54g be good enough to accommodate the 10Mbps cable bandwideth?

netgear answers:

I have a few that I would recommend and they have great price tags:

Belkin Wireless N+ 802.11n Router (Black)
*Router lets you easily create a large Wireless-N network for the home or office
*MIMO antenna technology provides extended range and data throughput up to 300 Mbps
*Security options include Wi-Fi Protected Setup, WPA/WPA2 and 64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption
*USB port allows connection of an external hard drive or thumb drive for networked storage
*Four gigabit Ethernet ports

Michael asks…

I have a wireless at&t router a 2wire one. I don't have the dsl service with at&t now.?

Currently i'm using time warner cable internet, they supply me with a the modem and i have a dlink wireless router connected to the modem that time warner cable gave me. Instead of using the dlink can i use the wireless router that i used to use when i had a contract with at&t? or is thei 2wire wireless router is only design to work when you have a contract of dsl with at&t. The reason why i want to do this is because the 2wire is better in my opinion than the old dlink wireless router that im using.

Thanks

Thanks

netgear answers:

I think you are correct that the 2wire is a better router, problem is, it was built as a DSL modem/router. No DSL, no router. There are a few of them that can be changed to standard ethernet routers in the setup pages but not many. You can check your model at http://support.2wire.com but most were built for DSL only.

You can hook it up as an access point however. Connect it up to your computer (no internet) configure the 2wire to NOT act as a DHCP server and set it to a static address for the WAN using an address from the DLINK's range. (Usually that range will be 192.168.0.x) You can setup the 2wire to say 192.168.0.10 with a 255.255.255.0 subnet and use 192.168.0.1 (or whatever the dlink address may be!)

Then connect any of its LAN ports to your dlink routers lan ports. Poof you have a good solid access point, the dlink still acts as the router.

Mark asks…

why wont a url load when my computer says it's connected to a wireless network?

we have two laptops - one is a ibook and the other is a pc. our internet is throught time warner and our wireless router is a three year old mac airport express. both of our laptops are recognizing the wireless network that we set up, bothe the modem and the router are blinking a happy green color, and yet no urls will load. what the heck? can anyone help? oh. and we already rebooted an restarted EVERYTHING and all that stuff. so, that's not the problem.... can you think of something better to try?

netgear answers:

Click on the windows wireless connection icon in your tool barr
Look at activity. Its most probably sending packets but not receiving packets.

Try going to Start menu> Connect To > Show all connections->right clicke on the wireless/local connection->properties->Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties
and selected the checkbox Obtain IP address automatically.

If that doesn't work then it has to do with your router or your ISP.

Chris asks…

Best wireless router for numerous wireless locations?

My roommates and I recently purchased time warner cables roadrunner package with turbo boost (22mbps) and we have 3 laptops and 2 Nintendo Wii's. We were wondering what the best wireless router would be for absolute best performance because as we all know a shitty router will cause even the best of internet to fuck up. Basically I'm asking for a lag free, build up free, router that will be good for online gaming on the wii as well as streaming tv shows off nbc and downloading mass amounts of porn...jk....actually, with my room mates, probably not a jk... anyways yeah. thanks

netgear answers:

Probably a Linksys Or Netgear But you should go to Best buy or some other electronic store and ask them and they will give you the right router for your needs.
