Vonage/Linksys Password?

Q. I don't know what my wifi password is. My father forgot it and I'm trying to figure out what i can do. We have a Linksys WRT160N V3 router if it matters. I try going to our I.P. address but it takes me to the Vonage login screen. It says the Username is router but my father has forgotten the password. What should i do?

A. 1. On the back of the router there is a small RESET button. Use a pen to press and hold it down for at least 30 seconds. This will reset your router's configuration to the factory defaults.
2. Now type this into your web browser and hit enter: http://192.168.1.1
3. If it asks for the username/password: Refer to your router's manual to find it. By default, the username is "admin" and the password is "admin" (no quotes).
4. At the top of the router configuration page, click the "Wireless" tab then underneath that the "Wireless Security" sub-tab.
5. Select your preferred wireless security mode from the drop-down box that appears: WEP, WPA Personal/Enterprise, WPA2 Personal/Enterprise.
6. Type in your desired password and click the "Save Settings" button at the bottom.
7. At the top, click the "Administration" tab then the "Management" sub-tab. In the "Router Password" box, type in your desired password (this password will need to be entered when attempting to access http://192.168.1.1) then re-enter to confirm. Scroll down and click the "Save Settings" button at the bottom again.
-----------------------
OPTIONAL:
The WRT160N V3 comes with faulty firmware that will cause slowdowns and disconnections. I recommend you download the newest firmware v3.0.03 here:
http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT160N
1. Click the "Downloads" tab, select "Version 3.0" from the drop-down box, and click Download.
2. After the download, upgrade your router by going to the "Administration" tab then the "Firmware Upgrade" sub-tab on the router's configuration page.
3. From there, click the "Browse" or "Choose File" button, open the .bin firmware file you just downloaded, and click "Start to Upgrade".

Hope this helped.

Linksys wrt160N problem?
Q. I bought linksys 160N last night but there is a problem as when i turn on the router, sometimes the lights turn on but sometimes don't and when lights didn't turn on, there is a very tiny sound comes out of router. Also i got DC a lot. please help me out

A. My solution:
- only use the linksys wrt160N as an accespoint : don't use the internet port on the router !!!
ONLY USE THE Ethernet ports (1, 2, 3, 4) for ALL your network traffic
- disable DHCPserver on the wrt160N

The DHCP server/internetport causes the problems on the wrt160n, so the router dropped the wired/wireless internetconnection).
The DHCP server on the modem/router works good, "he is the boss in your network" : disable the dhcp-server on the linksys wrt160N, it can conlict anymore and don't want to be the boss anymore in your network.
One DHCP-boss in your network is enough

Setup:
router ip = 192.168.1.9
DHCP server --> disabled (don't forget !!)

Wireless: Manual
BASIC WIRELESS SETTING :
network mode = Wireless-G only ( my laptop has G ... and no N)
Networkname (SSID) = PIETJE&puk (example)
standard channel = 11 - 2.462GHZ (no conflicts with my DECTphone anymore)
SSID broadcast = disabled

WIRELESS MACFILTER (OPTIONAL) : ENABLED
access restictions= permit PC's ....
mac adres list = < wireless macadres laptop/pc >

administration:
router password = THis&4evER (example of strong password )
(wireless)remote access = disabled

How can I change my IP address?
Q. I want to change my Canadian IP Address into an American one so I can use specific services like spotify and netflix. I heard from a friend that you can change your IP by entering it into some settings on your router. I have a Linksys WRT160N V3 router. I don't have my manual and I am on a mac. Also, will this mess up my cable provider? I.E. give me American rates or stop providing services?
What If I change my DHCP to a Static IP and then change my IP from there?

A. What you need is a Personal VPN, http://www.personalvpn.org which will do this in a safe and reliable manner.

how do i change the ssid on my router?
Q. i have a linksys-N router the model number is wrt160n

how do i change the ssid to what i want an set up my security so i need a password?

the didk that came with it was supposed to set that stuff up but the program on the disk couldnt detect the router

i am online with the router, and it works fine...but it is an open connection...i dont like that

A. You will have to access the routers "page" or GUI

Most routers are shipped defaulting to 192.168.1.1
If you type that into your IE or mozilla address bar it should pop up a window asking for a user name and password

If not (and you don't have an instruction manual) you could just google the name brand (i.e. Lynksis, Net Gear.)

Once you google that you should be able to find out its default IP address and the default username and password.

Lynksis is 192.168.1.1 and the user name is left blank, the password is admin.

Once in the GUI Just find the wireless setup tab and you should be able to change the SSID there, make sure to click on save.

If you do find an instruction manual or the defaults online for your Router and nothing you try gets into the GUI, you may need to reset it, just find the tiny little reset button put a pen tip on it while powering off and on the router. Then all of the default ip address and paswords should work to get the SSID changed.

How can I set up two router in my network?1 router is wired, while the second 1 is wireless.?

Q. I'm using Linksys BEFSR41 w/ IP Address 192.168.0.1 for my main router connected to my modem.2nd router wrt160n, but i cannot connect to the internet. What do i need to do?

A. I'm going to assume Router 1 = wired to ADSL. Router 2 = wireless .

Trick is, R2 has to be wired to R1 AND R2 has to know that to get to the internet it must use the wired link to R1 and NOT it's own internal ADSL/ phone socket (which won't be connected to anything).

I've checked the wrt160n user manual, and, as far as I can tell, it can't do this ..

How can I manage time of my home wireless?
Q. I need to manage time of my children in using internet. I often turn off the router to do this. However, if my children turn on the router, they continue using internet. How can I disconnect wireless of computers although my children turn on the router. My house use wireless. Thanks

A. Many routers will allow you to set times that the connection will work. Read your router's manual to see if yours offers that feature. If it doesn't, an update to the firmware might implement that feature. If not, you'll have to replace the router with one that does. I know for a fact that both the Linksys WRT160N and Netgear WRN834B V2 routers support that feature set. There are probably other routers from those manufacturers that support it, as well as routers from other manufacturers that do.

Tip: Make SURE to set a hardened password and keep it secret from the kids! Kids have an annoying habit of being able to figure these things out!

how to find out my router password?
Q. Im trying to make a server for me and my friend, but I have to portforward the IP (entering 192.168.1.1 in the url bar). When i do that, it comes up with a username and password box, but I dont know either. My router model is a cisco, linksys, wrt160n v3, and I have tried all of the standard user and passwords (admin and admin, ect...). Please help, I am getting fustrated, and thanks!

A. Download the WRT160N V3 manual: http://downloads.linksys.com/downloads/userguide/1224640959708/WRT160N_V10_UG_A-WEB.pdf

The default username is "blank" (nothing) and the default password is "admin".

Connect a PC or laptop via Ethernet to one of the router's LAN ports and follow the instructions in the manual to set it up.

If the password has been changed and you don't know the login password you'll have to reset the router to factory default state. The instructions for resetting will be in the manual. If the router is reset to factory default, thus erasing all user modified settings then it will revert to the default passwords listed above and in the manual.

Be sure to change the default password of the administrative interface of your router for security.

Good Luck...

why cant i get wirelss internet on my laptop?

I have a router in my basement but the signal strength is bad when im playing my PS3.?
Q. Can I get a wireless router for my room to make the signal stronger for online play and if I can what wireless router do you recommend that is quality but not to expensive?

A. The Linksys WRT160N is good, but since you are gaming, the D-Link routers with ubicom CPUs have the best QoS because it is all automatic and effective. QoS will prioritize upstream packets from your LAN to your modem, so gaming has priority over any computer with P2P. If you play any online games, QoS is a must because it really reduces headaches.

The D-Link DIR-625 is the cheapest router with that CPU but is great. The Linksys routers have QoS but it is all manual and you need to configure TCP/UDP ports for each different game you play which is quite annoying for console games as port numbers are not always documented.

I'd really recommend a wireless repeater or ethernet bridge with a long cable instead of replacing your router. THe best ones are actually build yourself and it is easy.
For 802.11g, the Linksys WRT54GL (not WRT54G or WRT54GS) is the best option.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124190
Then flash with DD-WRT (or tomato) firmware and create a Repeater Bridge in the DD-WRT setup.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124190
Add a Virtual Interface for the repeater and give it a new SSID and WPA2-PSK AES passphrase. THen enter in the SSID and WPA/WEP key of your base router and it should setup the bridge.

Guide for Repeater
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge

Position the repeater mid way between the PS3 and base router, then connect to the repeater SSID from the PS3.

Or you can use a wireless ethernet bridge with a longer cable. Note the Repeater bridge will also bridge the repeater's ethernet ports to the base station so it is essentially a repeater + a wireless ethernet bridge, but the DD-WRT setup for a Wireless bridge requires fewer steps to setup.

Guide for Ethernet Bridge
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge

You can also buy a powerline adapter with or without 802.11g WAP extended. These are more expensive and have lower bandwidth and mixed reviews. They do works but with varied results

http://www.netgear.com/Products/PowerlineNetworking/PowerlineWirelessAccessPoints.aspx
http://www.netgear.com/Products/PowerlineNetworking/PowerlineEthernetAdapters.aspx

The best Ideal option is a new simultaneous dual band 802.11n router with a simultaneous dual band 802.11n ethernet bridge.

For a store bought Ethernet Bridge, the Linksys WGA600N is the best option with a Linksys WRT610N router. It supports simultaneous dual band 802.11n, which is great.
It is likely too expensive. THe repeater idea should work just fine IF your base router is good.

How do i hook up a wireless router to hughesnet?

Q. Im looking into buying a laptop, and i have a desktop pc with hughesnet. the only dilema i have with getting the laptop is i would like wireless internet to it. i cant figure out how to connect a router to the hughesnet thing. im looking into the LINKSYS WRT160N that i can get with the laptop, and i heard that N is the best to get.
any information would be appreciated, but i really need to know how i will hook up the router to the hughesnet device.

A. While Wireless N is the best to get, it is really not practical and your Laptop may not even have a Wireless N radio installed.

The installation should not be a real problem, all you would have to do is to remove the current ethernet cable from the PC and attach it to the WAN port of the router, then using a second cable (one should come with the router) attach the PC to any of the available ports.

The only issue that may arise, and it has only happened to me once, is that the MAC address of your PC may have been registered on Hughesnet end and you will no longer be able to connect to the Internet. This is not really a problem if you know what to do.
When you are setting up the router, there is a place that will allow you to 'clone' the MAC address. What this does is to make the router appear to have the same MAC address as your PC and after cloning you will be able to surf the web.

All that remains is following the manual to set up your wireless setting.

A word about Wireless N or any other wireless protocol.

While Wireless N does allow for faster speeds and longer distances the limiting factor is going to be the speed of your Internet connection.

Satellite connections can get as high as 5 mbps so even with the highest available speed, an 802.11 G wireless network is twice as fast as your Internet connection..

The biggest noticeable difference is the range at which these two would work. Wireless G has an indoor range of 150 feet and Wireless N has a range of 300 feet (both are approximations). You can double both of these for outdoor operation.

There is nothing that would prevent you from running a Wireless N router and connecting to a device that was Wireless G since the N router will also talk on 2.4 GHz. Likewise if your laptop has a Wireless N card it can talk to a Wireless G router.

I know, way to much information for a simple question, I just wanted to make sure you make an informed decision.

In the "Router Password" box, type in your desired password (this password will need to be entered when attempting to access http://192.168.1.1) then re-enter to confirm. Scroll down and click the "Save Settings" button at the bottom again.

Internet doesn't work when router is connected to it

Q. When my modem is connected directly to my computer my Internet works but when I connect router to modem Internet stops working?!?

Model Number:WRT160N
Manufacturer:Linksys

A. what you think you just plugg it in and you have internet ???

it has to be configured . read the manual

DHCP server --> disabled (don't forget !!)

Wireless: Manual
BASIC WIRELESS SETTING :
network mode = Wireless-G only ( my laptop has G ... and no N)
Networkname (SSID) = PIETJE&puk (example)
standard channel = 11 - 2.462GHZ (no conflicts with my DECTphone anymore)
SSID broadcast = disabled

WIRELESS MACFILTER (OPTIONAL) : ENABLED
access restictions= permit PC's ....
mac adres list = < wireless macadres laptop/pc >

administration:
router password = THis&4evER (example of strong password )
(wireless)remote access = disabled

Connecting 2 Linksys Routers?
Q. I bought a Linksys WRT160N wireless router a few months ago and hooked it up, with my laptop connected wirelessly, and an xbox 360 and 2 computers connected wired. The wired connections frequently lost connection, so i am wondering if i can connect my wireless router to a wired linksys router. I have heard of wireless access points, but would making the second router (wireless router) an access point still allow my laptop to connect and use the internet? So, in conclusion, is it possible to connect a wired and wireless router together on the same modem and still have them both provide internet?

A. Yes, you can do that. However, the process is complicated, and you will need to consult your manual and/or the Linksys website support for details. Basically, you're NOT using the router part of the wireless router at all, but only as an access point. It's known as "pass-thru".

What does this button on the front of my router do?

Q. I have a Linksys WRT160N v.2 Wireless Router, that I use to connect my computers and Wii to the Internet. There is a button on the front of the router, and It has two arrows going in a cycle, does anyone know what it does?

A. WI-FI protected setup button
It automatically configures the wi-fi for devices that support wi-fi protected setup.

In the manual there is more information in Chapter 3 under Advanced Configuration.

Kids have an annoying habit of being able to figure these things out!

why cant i get wirelss internet on my laptop?

Q. my dad just gave me a toshiba laptop.i have a router but i dont know how to get my internet on it.its has wifi built into it or something like that and i dont know what to do and im getting really frustrated the router is a linksys wrt160n v2 and my dad gave me a dynex internet card which isn't working please help

A. Have you set up the router to accept wireless signals? Have you looked at the wireless configuration pages (type 192.168.1.1 into a browser address bar)? Have you read the manual for the router? Have you read the manual for the Internet card? Have you Googled for a solution?

THe repeater idea should work just fine IF your base router is good.

does the orange light on my linksys wireless router mean that it is off?

Q. i have a wrt160n v3 wireless router and i am right next to my router and i can not connect to wifi.
im trying to connect to my router from my ipod and the light never stays blue it is either orange or off. i get good connection when it is blue for the 30 seconds it is.

A. what does the manual say about the yellow light? what exactly are you unable to connect to? can you connect to the router? perhaps the router is unable to connect due to some configuration error. is your wifi adapter on? if you are sure everything is configured properly... try rebooting all devices. turn off your laptop, then unplug the router, then the box/modem. turn everything on in reverse order. note that the router should normally be blinking furiously as it sends and receives data... good luck

2 Xbox 360 250GB slims on the same network?
Q. I have been having problems with my xbox LIVE connection on my home network. I use a cisco linksys WRT160N V3 wireless router with a motorola SBV5220 cable modem. My younger brother also has the same xbox as I do, but he has no problems connecting to LIVE. I use a manual IP address because the router won't assign one. The problems that are experienced when i try to conenct to the network range from a moderate NAT to just not being able to connect to LIVE outright. I was wondering if there were any solutions to this or if I'll have to resort to offline gaming while I'm home.

A. Just try using your brothers xbox, that is if he lets you..

A. What you need is a Personal VPN, http://www.personalvpn.org which will do this in a safe and reliable manner.

any information would be appreciated, but i really need to know how i will hook up the router to the hughesnet device.

Kids have an annoying habit of being able to figure these things out!

does the orange light on my linksys wireless router mean that it is off?
Q. i have a wrt160n v3 wireless router and i am right next to my router and i can not connect to wifi.
im trying to connect to my router from my ipod and the light never stays blue it is either orange or off. i get good connection when it is blue for the 30 seconds it is.

A. what does the manual say about the yellow light? what exactly are you unable to connect to? can you connect to the router? perhaps the router is unable to connect due to some configuration error. is your wifi adapter on? if you are sure everything is configured properly... try rebooting all devices. turn off your laptop, then unplug the router, then the box/modem. turn everything on in reverse order. note that the router should normally be blinking furiously as it sends and receives data... good luck

why cant i get wirelss internet on my laptop?
Q. my dad just gave me a toshiba laptop.i have a router but i dont know how to get my internet on it.its has wifi built into it or something like that and i dont know what to do and im getting really frustrated the router is a linksys wrt160n v2 and my dad gave me a dynex internet card which isn't working please help

A. Have you set up the router to accept wireless signals? Have you looked at the wireless configuration pages (type 192.168.1.1 into a browser address bar)? Have you read the manual for the router? Have you read the manual for the Internet card? Have you Googled for a solution?

DHCP server --> disabled (don't forget !!)
