How do i update my linksys firmware and install it?

Q. I have a linksys wireless router and the disc somehow ended up cracked. Ive called linksys but in order to do anything they need me to plug in the router, and i cant because everytime i do, the phone line drops. I dont have another phone to call from and im lost. The router is like 2 years old and never used so i know the firmware needs updated for it to work, but i also need the software and i cant find that at all. Ive downloaded the firmware but i dont know what to do with it.

first I have an old Linksys WRT54GS version 1 ( no version # on the bottom label ) that was first sold on: 03/01/2004 and I have updated this router's firmware 17+ times as the original linksys firmware sucked badly (reboots and random errors) went thru 5 versions from linksys and it got better but never perfect
so I tryed an aftermarket firmware DDWRT and it got better still but I was not in heaven till I installed tomato firmware and now I can run bit-torrent and 5 computers and 2 wireless laptops thru my dsl with only 2 restarts in the last 6 months
now if I had not done any firmware upgrades this router would have gone in the trash 3~4 years ago (or if I could get fibre or 50Mb+ cable as this router can not handel those higher speeds)
now as to maintenance I dust out my router 4 times a year and make shure that it does not get very hot (moving it to a cooler spot on mid summer when the temps hit 90+ upstairs)

so first post you router's model number and what version so we can let you know if it is a lemon or if it just needs an update

A. The NAT issue is perhaps due to the UPnP on the router not working right. Have you tried updating the firmware on the router to the latest available on the Linksys website?

If that doesn't help, then you can manually forward the Xbox Live ports on the router to the Xbox. You can go to www.portforward.com to see how to do this (first find your router, then select Xbox Live for the app).

A. Don't open it just click cancel. Then go to 192.168.1.1 or what ever your router's ip is. Then log in, the default password is usually admin for name and a blank password or reverse it blank name and admin for the password. On the most common router, the WRT54G you click on administration on the top and then firmware upgrade. Then click choose file and click on the unopened .bin file. DO NOT uncompressed the .bin file it must be the original compressed .bin file or you could ruin the router!.

I bought a Microsoft Wireless Adapter and it is telling me that my NAT is set to moderate and it needs to be open. I went into my router setup and there is no option to change my NAT settings and my UPnP is already set to enabled. What to do I need to change so my NAT is open?

A. The NAT issue is perhaps due to the UPnP on the router not working right. Have you tried updating the firmware on the router to the latest available on the Linksys website?

If that doesn't help, then you can manually forward the Xbox Live ports on the router to the Xbox. You can go to www.portforward.com to see how to do this (first find your router, then select Xbox Live for the app).

so I tryed an aftermarket firmware DDWRT and it got better still but I was not in heaven till I installed tomato firmware and now I can run bit-torrent and 5 computers and 2 wireless laptops thru my dsl with only 2 restarts in the last 6 months
now if I had not done any firmware upgrades this router would have gone in the trash 3~4 years ago (or if I could get fibre or 50Mb+ cable as this router can not handel those higher speeds)
now as to maintenance I dust out my router 4 times a year and make shure that it does not get very hot (moving it to a cooler spot on mid summer when the temps hit 90+ upstairs)

so first post you router's model number and what version so we can let you know if it is a lemon or if it just needs an update

Q. I just went to the linksys webpage and updated the firmware to 1.02.5 but the file never opened and said choose an application to open it. What would I used to open this file on an imac and set it up?

A. Don't open it just click cancel. Then go to 192.168.1.1 or what ever your router's ip is. Then log in, the default password is usually admin for name and a blank password or reverse it blank name and admin for the password. On the most common router, the WRT54G you click on administration on the top and then firmware upgrade. Then click choose file and click on the unopened .bin file. DO NOT uncompressed the .bin file it must be the original compressed .bin file or you could ruin the router!.
