How do I turn off the wireless component feature of the Linksys WRT160N Router?

Q. Hello. How do I go about shutting off the wireless feature of my Linksys WRT160N Router (Wireless-N Broadbrand Router)? I am not sure if this particular router has the option or not. I may be wrong. Please help me. I do not need the wireless running right now. I am only using the wired Ethernet ports at this time. Disabling this feature will help me in terms of security. Thank you!

A. Access the setup page of the router by launching an
Browser and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When
it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field
empty and provide password as "admin" (Without quotes)
click on ok.

Click on Wireless Tab & Select the wireless network mode to disable.

This would disable the wireless features of the router.

How to make Linksys wireless router private?
Q. I have a Linksys wireless router and want to keep it private. Can you tell me step-by-step what to do? Thank you!

A. One thing that one must do is password protect ones router in order to keep people from logging into your network and stealing sensitive data.

If you think offenders are logging into your network through a router, than password protect your router.
Log into your router. Set up the password there.

XP
1) Goto Start/Run
2) Type in "cmd"

Vista
1) Click the Start button
2) Type in "command"

Once you are in the command prompt:
1)Type in "ipconfig"
2) In your Internet browser type in "http://" followed by your default gateway (found in the command prompt)
***Example: http://192.168.1.1 (try clicking the link)
3) Login (search online for login info) Usually admin, password
3) There should be a link on the side somewhere. It should have several options like WEP, WPA etc.

Another method is implementing MAC addressing or dynamically assigned IP addresses.

How do I connect a dsl to a linksys wireless B router without obtaining IP address automatically?
Q. My dsl has it's own IP address that must be used but the linksys setup won't allow it. Says I have to let the computer obtain the IP address automatically. How do I do this.

A. You'll probably have better luck if you just forget the Setup CD and try it manually.

Here are some steps to try.

First connect the line from the DSL modem to the router WAN port.
Next plug the computer into the router with a Cat5 ethernet cable. Open a browser and navigate to http://192.168.1.1 and login to the router's webclient. On the Setup page choose static IP and enter the IP/Subnet mask along with any connection options that you might have from the ISP. From here also enable the DHCP server option as well and save. Also make sure to change the routers default username and password and to set up some type of security on the wireless such as WPA along with a shared key. Next configure your wireless NIC to Get an IP address automatically and use the wireless NIC's software or Windows discovery tool to search and connect to your wireless network.

Obviously you can remove the Cat 5 after the wireless is enabled.

Now it will be a little different in terms of addressing if you have a modem/router combo instead of just a DSL modem given to you by your ISP.

How can you create a password for a linksys wireless router using a Mac?
Q. I tried using 192.168.1.1 and typing admin but it doesn't work.

A. Take an Ethernet cable and connect it to the Mac. Take the other end of that same cable and connect it to LAN or Ethernet Port at the back of the access point.

After connecting the Mac to the access point, assign a static IP address. To configure a Mac to get an IP address automatically, you have five steps:
1. Connecting the Devices Together
2. Checking If the Mac Is Set To DHCP
3. Checking the Routers IP Address
4. Getting the DNS Servers From a Linksys Router
5. Configuring a Static IP Address On the Ethernet Adapter

Next its time to access the setup page for your router. This has three steps:
1. Open a web browser.
2. Go to the Address bar then enter your access points default IP address and press return.
3. A new window will prompt for a Name and Password. Leave the Name field blank, type in your access points password in the Password field then click Log In. The default password for linksys routers is usually "admin".

Most of my this answer is nearly word for word from the linksys support site, but I didn't go through all of the instructions for doing some of the steps, so if you start thinking, "But how do I know if my mac is set to DHCP?" or "How do I do step number 4?" or something, just go to the linksys page & enter the serial number of your router in the support area.

If you are interested in advancements in wireless internet that could save you all this difficult stuff, check out WiMax from Clear. http://www.clear.com/?utm_source=bc It is high speed wireless internet that's not too expensive. Unfortunately its only in Portland, Oregon right now, but it will be coming to other cities soon.
