I have a linksys router and im trying to setup wirless internet through a motorola surf board modem?

Q. I plugged the modem into the linksys router (internet port) and had another ethernet cord connecting to the linksys to the computer (when doing this the computer plugged in doesnt even have internet). I dont have a setup disk for the router, and the linksys setup wizard from the site doesnt seem to work.

A. This could be a lot of things.
1. Reset your cable modem. Unplug for 10 seconds, then plug back in
2. hold down the little button on the linksys router (even if brand new) for like 30 seconds. It should reset to factory defaults.
3. Plug modem into internet port on router.
4. Plug computer into a free port on the router.
5. Check computer settings to make sure it does not have a static ip address. you can do this by going to network connections, Local Area Connection (which should show as connected or plugged in), then right clicking and selecting properties. Then look for TCP/IP properties, and you should see the area where you can change the IP and DNS settings. Make sure these are all blank.
6. You can open internet explorer and type 192.168.1.1 Just that. nothing else.
7. it will ask you for username and password. username is admin, password either blank , or admin.

that should get you into router setup.

How to put a security password on a linksys wireless router?
Q. i have a WRT54G linksys router and i disabled the password so i can be easier on the family, but now i found out that hackers/neighbors/ and others are using this network. How can i put up a password?

A. To change your wireless password:

Open a command prompt on a computer connected to your network, and type in ipconfig. Take the default gateway address and put it in your web browser. The login is usually admin admin, or admin *blank*. Then look through the control panel for an option to change the wireless password.

If you are given the option, use WPA2 with AES for your security settings.

How do i Password Protect my wireless internet through my linksys router?
Q. I have had this linksys router for about 2 years now and all this time the wireless internet has been open, but now i want to lock it using a password so its not free to anyone. How do i do that without reinstalling the whole router?

A. 1) With your web browser log into 192.168.1.1 -- the username is admin and the password is either admin or just leave it blank (no password).
2) Click on the Wireless tab
3) Click on Wireless Security
4) Chose a Security Mode (WEP, WPA, etc,,) (WPA is more secure)
5) At this point you can enter a password/shared key
6) Put the same password/key in your wireless setup on your computer.

How do i get my linksys router password back?
Q. I have a linksys router, i have no idea what model i just know its a wireless g with speedbooster, and i have forgotten my login password. I have tried doing a hard reset of the router as well as unplugging it and plugging it back in. Is there any way to reset or change the password without logging into the router on 192.168.1.1?

A. You must not be doing the hard reset properly or you do not know the default factory default password for the admin...

Usually, holding the reset button on the back for 30 seconds or so will do a factory reset of a router.

Default admin usernames and passwords are usually
admin admin
admin blank

You do know what model of router you have... Pick it up and read it. Go to the Linksys web site and download the manual (if you do not have the paper copy handy) and find out how to do a proper reset and look up the default username and password.
