Netgear Faq: Netgear Wgr614 Setup

Daniel asks…

How do I set up a wireless network without a modem? It's in a dorm room, so the ethernet plugs into the wall.?

The directions (It's a Netgear WGR614 v7) tell me to turn off the modem and router and then turn everything on in a particular order. I continue to get error messages during setup that the internet isn't connected (although the lights on the router show that it is).

Is there some magic secret that I'm missing?

The router seems to be connected to the internet, because when I connect the ethernet to the router, and then the router to my laptop, it automatically overrides my homepage to the Netgear setup page.

I guess what I need is "Setting up a wireless network in your dorm room for Dummies".

Help, please?

netgear answers:

I assume you are setting it up through the CD that came with it. I would just log into the router and set it up manually, only takes a few more minutes. Should be 192.168.1.1 in your browser, put that in, and you should be prompted for login info. Default login is admin and password is password for Netgear.

Once you get in, you should just have to set the SSID, and I would go ahead and encrypt it. After that, it should be fine, it should get everything else on it's own. Report if you have any problems, can work with you from there.

Donald asks…

How to set up a simple home network? Please help!?

I currently have two computers hooked up on my network and a Canon MP460 printer (all-in-one). Basic setup with both computers wired to the Netgear WGR614 v.5 wireless router. I also have a wireless card, but I am not using that currently. I just want to set up a safe and working home network and if I can do the same with the printer. I would really like some help with this and all proper information will be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU!!
Just for clarity this should also enable me to access each computer's files from the other computer. Thanks again!
I am running windows XP on both computers which are Dells.

netgear answers:

Are all of your computers on the same work group name. You can see if this is true by going into My Computer then My network connection and then view computers in my work group. If you don't see them then you have to go into control panel and system. There should be a tab for computer name and that is where you can change the work group name. You cn then add the printer as a network printer

Steven asks…

what does "VALIDATING IDENTY" MEAN??

im trying to setup my wireless router up, and it says validating identy.
what should i do?
i have a netgear wgr614

netgear answers:

It is checking to see if the system you are on(wireless) is the one that is allowed to connect with the router. You must have the security on the router on wanting the correct name or SSID and password or PASSCODE. Usally this means the WEP security is enabled. If this is the case, enter what the SSID is in the wireless card setup and enter the PASSCODE. It must be exactly as it was set in the router.

Michael asks…

Help with this wireless connection?

I finished the setup and everything, the plugging of the ethernet wires and all that. I finished the setup and congratulated me for it. However, I'm just not sure what to do next. It redirected me to a website "Smart Wizard" Router Manager. The model of the router is Netgear WGR614 and my laptop's a Dell Inspiron. It's supposed to be wireless but whenever I pull out the blue cord that connects my laptop and the router together, the internet is gone. So it means I didn't do it right. I have no clue what to do next. And whenever I try to connect to a network, The settings saved on this computer for the network doesn't match the requirments of the network. What's the problem and what should I do? thanks.

netgear answers:

ON the router manager, you need to set up the wifi SSID name and WEP64bit security password.
Then on the laptop, unhook the ethernet cable, browse the wireless network, select the SSID you put in, and enter the password.
