Netgear Faq: Netgear Router Ip

James asks…

How do I CHANGE my Netgear router IP Address??!?

I have a netgear router and i need help chaning it, any suggestions. ALSO is there a way to change it by resetting the router?! if yes, do i need to reset my modem before the router :D?

THANKS!

netgear answers:

If you're talking about the IP address sent out over the Internet, you can't change it. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) assigns it to you from a pool it, in turn, has been assigned by an international body. Nobody else in the world can have it. But at the same time, if you tried to use a different one, your ISP wouldn't recognize you and would refuse to talk to you.

And I don't think just resetting your router would cause your ISP to give you a different address. You literally have a lease on it for 24 hours based on your computer's registered MAC address. Turning off the router and turning it back on, or even resetting it, would most likely just get you the same address all over again.

Sorry.

How do I change to a static ip on my NETGEAR WNR2000 router?

My netgear router is currently on a dynamic ip and I want to change to a static. But when I try to change to a static ip it doesn't connect properly. Any help?

netgear answers:

You must use the Static IP address issued to you by your ISP ....

However, if you leave the router set to DHCP, your ISP is going to send you the correct (Static) IP each time you connect anyway :-)

PS even if you have a static IP, MOST ISP's prohibit you from running a web server on your account (unless you pay them) = check your Terms & Conditions (or risk getting cut off for 'excessive use')

New netgear router ip question?

Ok so I use to play warhammer 40k with my brother by direct connect. He would type in my ip address and we could play together while he is at collage. I just hooked up a netgear router and my ip changed, so I did ipconfig and he typed in that ip and it will not connect now. Do I have to do something in my settings and if so what?? Thanks

netgear answers:

You need to set your computer to be in the DMZ zone of the router.

How to change IP Address on Windows Vista With Netgear Router?

I have a Netgear 2.4G Router and I was wondering how I change my IP because I turned off my modem last night and it is still the same IP so if anyone knows how post a answer please.

netgear answers:

You have to change the mac address on the router. After changing the mac address, power cycle both the router and the modem. Then turn on the modem first, followed by the router. This will force the modem to think the router is a new, different device, since no two devices have the same mac address. Therefore, with a "different" device plugged into the modem, your ISP's DHCP server will issue it a different ip address. Login to your router and look for a page where you can spoof, or change the mac address.
