Netgear Faq: Netgear Wndr3700 Review

Daniel asks…

Are problems with WNDR-3700 fixed with DD-WRT?

Hey guys.

I'm in the market for a new router, I've been using my D-Link DGL-4300 for several years and it has been a fantastic router, but never supported DDWRT and it's time I get a new router.

I want wireless N, but I still want to be able to use G because some of my laptops are G. I want to be able to use both bands without loosing speed or bandwidth. MaximumPC had a really good review of the WNDR3700 from netgear, but after looking at customer reviews it seems that it has problems with dropping connection etc.

If I bought a WNDR3700 and flashed it to DDWRT would it fix the dropping problems? And if not, what router should I get?

I have 4 desktops, 2 xbox's, and 4 laptops consistently connected to my network, so I need something capable of handling that kind of bandwidth.

Also, would I be able to use my old DGL-4300 as a wireless signal booster if I bought the WNDR-3700? One of the far rooms in my house doesn't receive WiFi and I would like to be able to boost the signal using the router I have currently in conjunction with the WNDR-3700. Thanks!

First Netgear wndr 3700 it supported dd-wrt.The second thing is you can use your older ones as a WDS wireless distribution or wireless bridge/wireless repeater.Good luck if you need how to do it then let me know if I can assist you.

This is the one my friend uses, hes been using it for about 3 months with no problems. It streams youtube and livestreams perfectly, plays online FPS's like cod and battlefield with zero lag, and can be used for general use as well.

Ken asks…

Network hacked? Monitoring software? options?

I got the "nasty" letter from Comcast that someone at my IP address was downloading copyrighted stuff. Further investigation shows it couldn't have been my girlfriend (she has no idea what file sharing is) or myself (I don't file share). PLUS the file they listed is a 2011 comedy in RUSSIAN!!!! So it wasn't us (intentionally). Plus we don't p2p or torrent.

So either someone had my IP address at the time, which Comcast can't confirm as they say they can only track dynamic assignments for the last month (total garbage) or someone got in my firewall... Either my remote control (of a P2P app which doesn't exist on our machines) or a virus downloaded the file.

I secure my firewall. A Belkin N+ with WPA2. Do limited DHCP to select machines. Have Either ZoneAlarm, McAfee or Kapersky suites running on machines. Now only Norton IS 2012... And now full blown MalwareBytes in real time. Wich I had seen the latest reviews as I would have tried Bit Defender.

And I've switched over to a Netgear WNDR3700. I have the Belkin N+ which I'm thinking of flashing t0 DD-WRt and running 2 subnets. How secure is DDWRT?

Again, I use WPA2 with an insanely LONG key.

Can anyone recommend anything? I'm going through the house collecting MAC addresses and am securing via MAC Address. (but this can be bypassed). WPS is getting killed.

How about a network monitoring application? I want to watch to P2P activity... be able to determine different activity on my network.. By port, etc...

By the way, there is NOONE else on my network. My girlfriend who is an everyday user who doesn't veer off the extremely safe conservative track in browsing and myself who is conservative but 20 years of IT so I know how to lock down and where not to go..

Any advice?

I would say comcast had alocated the ip addres to someone else at the time, but.........
With software like aircrack your wireles password can be cracked in a couple of miniutes. (google wifi cracking software, the is lots of it)

i have my router setup so it does NOT broadcast a ssid, and have mac address filtering enabled.

I suggest you do the same.

I dont think your computers are at risk, or that anyone accessed them, or even tried to, i thinnk somone might have used your wireless, without you knowing
