Michael asks…

How do I install a Netgear Router if I do not have the required operating system?

I currently use Windows 7 but it says that setup can only operate with Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows Vista 32-bit. Product: WNDR3300.

netgear answers:

Are you just going through the setup program included on the disk or something?

If so, do the following to get around that.

1. Plug in the router, and plug your computer into one of the ports with a normal ethernet cable (1-4, not the internet port).

2. Go to the start menu, and in the search, type in cmd, then press enter. A black box (command prompt) should open.

3. Type ipconfig then press enter.

4. Write down the default gateway (192.168.x.x)

5. Open up an internet browser. It generally doesn't matter which. Close the black window (command prompt)

6. Type the default gateway number, periods and all into the address bar. Press enter

7. The default username, since you haven't set one, should be admin, and the password should be password. Some older routers use the password 1234.

8. A control panel of sorts should open up in your web browser for the router. All the options you need should be there.

9. The easiest settings for wireless are probably WPA2-Passkey where you can choose your own password, with both TKIP and AES encryption to make it compatible with more devices. Choose your own network name also to make it easy to find. Save settings.

10. Once all your router settings have been set (wireless is basically the only thing you need to change unless you want to change the password), unplug your computer from the router

11. Plug the router into the internet source (if it is a modem, you may need to unplug both devices for about 30 seconds, then plug them back in, modem first), with the plug going into the port on the router that looks set apart from the other ethernet ports. Sometimes it is green, or blue, or by itself.

12. Open your computer, and find the network you just set up (start->connect to).

13. Connect to it and use the password you just set up.

That's about as generic as I can get without knowing the exact specifications of the router or having a picture of it here in front of me.

EDIT: Most programs that say they will work with Windows Vista will work with Windows 7. Unless your computer is 64-bit the regular setup should work just fine

Router to Router setup?

InternetNetgear WNDR3300 wirelessComputer
+ wireless Belkin F5D8233-4v3
+ Other wireless computers

Basicly i want to add another wireless antenna to my network at a remote connection. So laptops can access shared files on my main computer.
IS it possible to possible for these 2 routers to work wirelessly? I really do not want to run a wire to another location if possible.

David asks…

Help needed to install my wireless modem.....?

i have just bought a wireless Netgear WNDR3300. I have been told to go into their website and download the software. However, when i attempt to load the setup, i get the following message: 'This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the set associations control panel'

The file format is .chk. What do i need to do?

netgear answers:

You need to log into the router and select the "upgrade" option. When prompted, you will navigate to the location on your PC where the file is. Then select it. The upgrade should proceed from there.

Just in case, here's how to log into it:
# Connect a computer to the LAN port of the router using an ethernet cable.
# Open up a browser and type in the following URL: http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 (depending on the model number of the router)
# Type the Username as admin, and Password as password. Then click OK.
