Netgear Faq: Netgear Router Login Address

Steven asks…

Why won't my Router let me host on port 80?

So I have my computer running a webhost fine. I can pick it up between LAN computers and everything. Only problem is, when I try to go to my domain (Cindex.tk or cindex.webhop.net, they're the same) it just goes to the login for my router.

I have a Netgear wpn824v3 router, Remote management is off, port 80 is forwarded to the correct address, all that stuff. I've done it all before. Anyone heard of this issue before?

netgear answers:

It is common for ISP to block port 80 if you are not on a business internet plan.
Business internet plan usually cost way more than home internet.
You can always host it on another port.

James asks…

Can't type IP address into browser?

Alright so I have a netgear router, and usually I could just type my IP address into the brower and it would come up with the login and I could open ports and stuff like that, but now I type it in and nothing comes up! I went into cmd and did IPconfig/all and my ip hasn't changed. Any help would be much appreciated thanks!
Yeah thats what I meant I was typing in the IP of my default gateway/router so.

netgear answers:

You aren't supposed to type in your IP address, but the IP address of the router.

For instance, mine's 192.168.1.1 but the addresses the router actually assigns computers and such start at 192.168.1.101

Michael asks…

How can i change my WEP key? I changed it and now i forgot it, now my wireless router doesnt work.?

i changed my WiFi settings in the options area to WEP and now i cant go log back in and change it. I tried going to router login.net but that didn't work, it sends me back to the netgear home. i tried putting the IP in the address bar but that didn't work either. I also tried resetting the box but that didn't help either, i pushed down the button for 30 sec. and waited for it to restart but that didn't work. If i don't change my WEP key how can I make my wireless router start shooting out WiFi again? The only way I'm using internet is by connecting the Ethernet cable to the computer. Someone please help! :/

netgear answers:

Press the Rest Button, It will reset, Look on your router they have Default Username & Password in which you can later use to reset everything..

Ip address help/portforwarding issue?

Alright so its my understanding that 10.0.0.1 is a private IP address. When i type it in my url bar, it takes me to my Router login page. So everything there is working in order. However, When i type Ipconfig in the cmd command console, It says my ipv4 address is 10.0.0.10 Which is an issue because thats also a private IP address type.

the confusion greatens when I go to Whatsmyip.org, I get a completly different anwser. It shows 173.180.103.139 as my IP address, and when im trying to portforward for minecraft, this starts to cause issues.

I know how to portforward, Ive done it many times and im not a "noob" but this is just dont get. When porforwarding for my Netgear wndr3700, I enter my ports select, TCP/UDP and then have to enter the IP address. Now usually i would enter 173.180.103.139, but it wont allow that. It says it has to be in the same format as 10.0.0.1. So if i enter 10.0.0.10, it accepts it, but then a later test will show my ports not open.

Im not sure whats happening here, and i hope i provided enough information to explain whats happening, Please help? If you need more info, email me at kyle6116@hotmail.com
I KNOW how to portforward, directing me to a site teaching people how to portforward wont help. I explained that when i enter 10.0.0.10, it doesnt show that the ports are open. and it wont let me enter my external ip adress
also my router says the factory default is 192.168.1.1 yet it was automatically set to 10.0.0.1
If i try and change it to 192.168.1.1 it wont let met either, saying its not in the same subnet as the wan address.

netgear answers:

Okay, it seems others have explained public and private addresses so I'll skip that part.

When you are doing port forwarding you are just directing a specific port request to a specific destination on your network. For example, if a request comes into your router for port 12345 you could direct it to a DVR for remote viewing, as long as the DVR was set up to use that port.

If you are trying to set up a server or such, you need to have either a STATIC IP (Public) from your provider or use a Dynamic DNS service, (search "free DDNS"). When you or someone wants to access your server they would enter "STATIC IP(colon)12345" or "http://ddns_hostname(colon)12345" in the address bar of their browser which would then get them to your ISP router (which should be st in bridge mode BTW *see below) which would pass the traffic to the Netgear, which would in turn see the request for port 12345 and then direct it to 10.0.0.20 (the address of your server).

*** Bridge Mode
Probably the reason your Netgear is not set to the default of 192.168.x.x is because your provider modem also has a built in router and is using the 192.168.x.x scheme. Some routers will attempt to set the modem to bridge mode during set up but if it fails they will switch to another private network scheme, usually the 10.x.x.x network.

In Bridge mode the provider modem would be used solely as an interface between the internet and your Netgear.

If it is not in bridge mode traffic come to the modem, gets routed to the local (private) network (probably 192.168.1.x), which is most likely the IP address of the Netgear, which then routes it to ITS local network , which is the 10.x.x.x.

Therefore you can still do port forwarding, but you will probably need to set it up on both the Netgear AND the provider modem. Forward port 12345 to 192.168.1.x on the provider modem, then forward port 12345 to 10.x.x.x on the Netgear.

BTW, how are you testing if the ports are open?

UPDATE if more questions.
