All i really wanna know is how to install the version of linux that will support my netgear WG111t, and how to install my wireless adapter WG111t.

Thank you :-)

netgear answers:

You should be able to in Ubuntu as other people have.

Install Ubuntu and then follow these steps:
(From Ubuntu forums)
Go to the following three sites:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/mis...wrapper-common
http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/mis...pper-utils-1.9
http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/net/ndisgtk

Download, from each of them, the version that corresponds to your computer (amd64, i386, etc.), and save these files to a USB drive or something similar.

Also, download the WG111T's wireless drivers from here: http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d102626.asp and place them on your USB as well.

Then boot up Ubuntu 7.10. Plug in your USB drive and install the three .deb files for ndiswrapper and ndisgtk. (You'll need to install ndiswrapper-common, then ndiswrapper-utils, and finally ndisgtk.) You should be able to install them by simply double-clicking on them.

Get the wireless drivers from the USB, and place them on the desktop. (You will need every file in the wireless driver folder, except for the files from the folders "ndis5" and "Utility.") Go to System -> Administration -> Windows Wireless Drivers. Install the files "athfmwdl.inf" and "netwg11t.inf" (which should be placed on your desktop) from there. Close Windows Wireless Drivers, and plug in your wireless card. (You may need to unplug it first.) You should see the blue light flashing.

Go to System -> Administration -> Network, and change the properties of the wireless connection to those of your router. If you use WPA encryption, you will need to either find a way to install WPA Supplicant or something similar, or change your security settings to WEP or no security.

Good luck!

William asks…

How many computers can my Netgear router support?

Here is the product: http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2503

netgear model MR814v2

I want to know how many cable/wireless connections are possible.

Thanks!

netgear answers:

For wired, you can support as many PCs as there are available IP addresses. You are able to have 253 workstations in a single subnet. Of course, since your netgear only has 4 ethernet ports, several additional switches are required to get remotely close to that number.

I do not see a limit on wireless connections in the official specs, but when you get around 10 -16, you start to see a decrease in performance. Nothing to really worry about in a home network environment.

On a side note, your access point only supports up to 11 Mbps. This is much lower than more recent wirless standards like wireless-G (54 Mbps) and if your computer supports wireless-N which is 108 Mbps. You would only really see a performance difference if you were transfering files between computers though. The Internet uses much less such as a fast DSL connection which is 3 Mbps download. Again, a side note but worth mentioning.

Hope this helps.

John asks…

got a new netgear router with WPS button. Do all or just the new laptops with vista connect or support to it?

my old laptop with xp did not connect to my new netgear router with WPS. What laptops support this connection? Thanks, Tim

netgear answers:

It seems like they should all be able to connect. Maybe the old XP was running an old outdated version of 802.11? Which you could fix with a wireless usb card. The typical configuration should be simple, just a generated key to allow others onto your wireless router. Http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/

Joseph asks…

How do i change my wpa netgear to wep to support my nintendo ds? (macbook)?

I want to use wifi on my nintendo ds but i don't know how to change my wpa personal to wep key. I have a macbook and when i type in the ip address on my search bar, it says it cannot find it. what am i doing wrong? Help please.
Also, i am not adding www. at the beginning when i type in the ip address

netgear answers:

First, this is a common mistake, many people make. Are you typing www? If you are, don't. Second look on the bottom of the router and find the ip address it says. I think netgear is 10.10.0.1 or 192.168.1.254. Which ever it is type it into Safari's address bar. Then on the right hand bar go to security and change the WPA-PSK to WEP. Then hit save. Your wifi will be disconnected, so you will have to put in the new password on your Macbook. Good luck!
