I have a similar problem, when I enable the WEP on my router, neither of the two PCs in the house can get a connection...

If you have to use an open network (no security) there are a couple of ways to protect yourself.

1. Turn off any Broadcast ID option. This will prevent other people from seeing your network.

2. Change the networks SSID this is the name the network uses, and with the Broadcast ID switched off, anyone wanting to access your network would need to GUESS your new ID. (There are ways of finding out the network name, but these are beyond the means of the average piggybacker)

3. Check for a whitelist or blacklist option, this allows you to allow or disallow a connection based upon the MAC code of their network hardware, carefully work thru the list and blacklist any devices you are certain arent yours. (you can usually find the MAC code printed on the back of any network devices you have)

These should enable you to leave your network open so that you no longer have problems with the WEP system, and still have a little protection from general piggybackers.

Alternately, you could choose not to use the Wireless, and switch to a cabled network. This would require you to run ethernet cables to all the devices in the house, but it would be totally secure.

Chris asks…

What is my default router password?

My routers ip is 10.0.0.1 netgear wrg614v7 and i cannot find the default username and password for it. Can someone tell me what it is or how to find it? I've already tried Portforward.com and it didn't help.
I've tried all of those and did it after i reseted my router and it still didn't work.

netgear answers:

The usual router default password can be a combination between

Admin, admin or administrator for the user ID

Password, password, or admin as the password.

If you've changed it at a point in time or want to start it fresh their ususually a button that you can press with a pin of some sort hold it for at least 20-30 seconds and try the default passwords.
