First thing to do is to remove the router from the equation so you can be 100% certain that it is in fact the router that is causing the issue. Unplug your router and connect your modem directly to a computer. Now reboot the modem, wait 60 seconds and reboot the computer. After doing this, test the speed again. If it is still slow, then your router is not the problem, but if it is no longer slow, then the router could be the culprit.

Put everything back the way it was.

If you are connecting to the router wirelessly, try connecting using a cable to see if the problem goes away. If it does, then the slowness issue is due to connecting wirelessly. Unfortunately there is not a lot you can do about that. You could try moving the computer closer to the router, and you could also try limiting the amount of interference. Microwaves, cordless telephones, baby monitors and other devices in the 2.4 GHz band can interfere with WiFi from your router. Turn them off and try again.

Another possibility would be to upgrade to a Wireless N router. Wireless N is faster than Wireless G, and it also uses different parts of the spectrum, so if you do have an interference issue, switching to Wireless N might solve it.

How do I set a Static DHCP ip?

Q. I have a Linksys WRT54GL router.
I want to set up port forwarding and don't want to have to change the ip each time I reboot.

A. Kim is wrong, there are several routers out there that will assign an IP address based upon a MAC address (also known as Static DHCP).

On the WRT54GL running the stock firmware there is no option for static DHCP, but you can load an after market firmware that will allow you to do it.

The GL is probably the best router out there for 3rd party firmware. I use DD-WRT but there are other options out there to look into. A lot of people seem to like Tomato firmware.

Why is my router is disconnecting?

Q. I've got a Linksys WRT54gl, it's about three months old. It worked fine until recently. The router disconnects about once a minute or so. It disconnects both the wired and wireless computers.
Installed the latest firmware. No change. Put DDWRT on it. No change. If I wire straight from the DSL modem to the computer there are 0 disconnects. DSL line quality is good. Renamed the SSID. First thing to do is to remove the router from the equation so you can be 100% certain that it is in fact the router that is causing the issue. Unplug your router and connect your modem directly to a computer. Now reboot the modem, wait 60 seconds and reboot the computer. After doing this, test the speed again. If it is still slow, then your router is not the problem, but if it is no longer slow, then the router could be the culprit.

Put everything back the way it was.

If you are connecting to the router wirelessly, try connecting using a cable to see if the problem goes away. If it does, then the slowness issue is due to connecting wirelessly. Unfortunately there is not a lot you can do about that. You could try moving the computer closer to the router, and you could also try limiting the amount of interference. Microwaves, cordless telephones, baby monitors and other devices in the 2.4 GHz band can interfere with WiFi from your router. Turn them off and try again.

Another possibility would be to upgrade to a Wireless N router. Wireless N is faster than Wireless G, and it also uses different parts of the spectrum, so if you do have an interference issue, switching to Wireless N might solve it.

Q. I have a linksys BEFSR41 and 2 computers connected to it via ethernet cables. My computer, a much more powerful Dell than the eMachine also connected seems to go slower/loses connection when the eMachine is running, but the eMachine isn't affected at all with or without the Dell running. Is there a way to make sure that my Dell takes say, 75% of the bandwidth?

A. Some routers have this function. It is common for those that can do access points so no one can hog entire system. or use p2p the wrt54gl can put third party firmware that can do this.

There seems to be a problem on your system though I would see what programs are going on internet causing this perhaps even a virus. Your router may also be at fault try updating firmware.
