Is this router compatible with this modem?
Q. I have a motocorla surfboard SBV5120 cable modem and a wired router (Linksys). I want to upgrade my router into wireless and was thinking of getting the
Cisco-Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G Broadband Router.
However, I am not sure if they both will work together.

A. It won't hurt to upgrade both devices' firmware by downloading the latest versions from the product webpages

What is the best way to add wireless to my home for my laptop?
Q. I have a laptop and we are putting in the office it is downstairs. We have comcast upstairs. I want to get a wireless keyboard and mouse. I want to just be able to just hook my laptop and hook it up so that I don't need to buy a computer.

A. I strongly suggest getting a Linksys WRT54GL Wireless router - $75US; This model supports 3rd party firmware that allows you to increase the signal range/strength which may be needed for penetration through the walls/floor of your home.

Make sure you get the most current firmware from linksys for the unit, enable WPA2 wireless security (WEP-128 is hackable in <5 minutes by someone outside your home), and change the default password for administration access. Mac address filtering is a strong suggestion, but not critical.

If you need help getting the above items done, take the router and your laptop down to a local computer service shop and have them enable the security for you (make them show you how to login and change the keys!!!). They can configure and test it in under 1/2 hour (labor).

If they try to tell you it will take longer, go elsewhere.

Best of success

How to allocate set amount of data to computers connected to router?
Q. We are on a capped broadband plan and I would like to allocate a set amount of the data to each person connected to our home network so we all get an equal share. When we reach our data limit we will be unable to connect to the netwrok or have a speed reduced.

Is this possible with my current router, Thomson TG585 V7, or what model of router can i buy that can do this?

I don't want to install software on each computer.

A. I haven't tried it but I've read that you can get routers such as the Linksys WRT54GL that is able to be flashed with gargoyle firmware and that will allow you to set quota limits.
