Vonage/Linksys Password?

Q. I don't know what my wifi password is. My father forgot it and I'm trying to figure out what i can do. We have a Linksys WRT160N V3 router if it matters. I try going to our I.P. address but it takes me to the Vonage login screen. It says the Username is router but my father has forgotten the password. What should i do?

A. 1. On the back of the router there is a small RESET button. Use a pen to press and hold it down for at least 30 seconds. This will reset your router's configuration to the factory defaults.
2. Now type this into your web browser and hit enter: http://192.168.1.1
3. If it asks for the username/password: Refer to your router's manual to find it. By default, the username is "admin" and the password is "admin" (no quotes).
4. At the top of the router configuration page, click the "Wireless" tab then underneath that the "Wireless Security" sub-tab.
5. Select your preferred wireless security mode from the drop-down box that appears: WEP, WPA Personal/Enterprise, WPA2 Personal/Enterprise.
6. Type in your desired password and click the "Save Settings" button at the bottom.
7. At the top, click the "Administration" tab then the "Management" sub-tab. In the "Router Password" box, type in your desired password (this password will need to be entered when attempting to access http://192.168.1.1) then re-enter to confirm. Scroll down and click the "Save Settings" button at the bottom again.

OPTIONAL:
The WRT160N V3 comes with faulty firmware that will cause slowdowns and disconnections. I recommend you download the newest firmware v3.0.03 here:
http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT160N
1. Click the "Downloads" tab, select "Version 3.0" from the drop-down box, and click Download.
2. After the download, upgrade your router by going to the "Administration" tab then the "Firmware Upgrade" sub-tab on the router's configuration page.
3. From there, click the "Browse" or "Choose File" button, open the .bin firmware file you just downloaded, and click "Start to Upgrade".

Hope this helped.

Linksys wrt160N problem?
Q. I bought linksys 160N last night but there is a problem as when i turn on the router, sometimes the lights turn on but sometimes don't and when lights didn't turn on, there is a very tiny sound comes out of router. Also i got DC a lot. please help me out

A. My solution:
- only use the linksys wrt160N as an accespoint : don't use the internet port on the router !!!
ONLY USE THE Ethernet ports (1, 2, 3, 4) for ALL your network traffic
- disable DHCPserver on the wrt160N

The DHCP server/internetport causes the problems on the wrt160n, so the router dropped the wired/wireless internetconnection).
The DHCP server on the modem/router works good, "he is the boss in your network" : disable the dhcp-server on the linksys wrt160N, it can conlict anymore and don't want to be the boss anymore in your network.
One DHCP-boss in your network is enough

Setup:
router ip = 192.168.1.9
DHCP server --> disabled (don't forget !!)

Wireless: Manual
BASIC WIRELESS SETTING :
network mode = Wireless-G only ( my laptop has G ... and no N)
Networkname (SSID) = PIETJE&puk (example)
standard channel = 11 - 2.462GHZ (no conflicts with my DECTphone anymore)
SSID broadcast = disabled

WIRELESS MACFILTER (OPTIONAL) : ENABLED
access restictions= permit PC's ....
mac adres list = < wireless macadres laptop/pc >

administration:
router password = THis&4evER (example of strong password )
(wireless)remote access = disabled

How can I change my IP address?
Q. I want to change my Canadian IP Address into an American one so I can use specific services like spotify and netflix. I heard from a friend that you can change your IP by entering it into some settings on your router. I have a Linksys WRT160N V3 router. I don't have my manual and I am on a mac. Also, will this mess up my cable provider? I.E. give me American rates or stop providing services?
What If I change my DHCP to a Static IP and then change my IP from there?

A. What you need is a Personal VPN, http://www.personalvpn.org which will do this in a safe and reliable manner.

how do i change the ssid on my router?
Q. i have a linksys-N router the model number is wrt160n

how do i change the ssid to what i want an set up my security so i need a password?

the didk that came with it was supposed to set that stuff up but the program on the disk couldnt detect the router

i am online with the router, and it works fine...but it is an open connection...i dont like that

A. You will have to access the routers "page" or GUI

Most routers are shipped defaulting to 192.168.1.1
If you type that into your IE or mozilla address bar it should pop up a window asking for a user name and password

If not (and you don't have an instruction manual) you could just google the name brand (i.e. Lynksis, Net Gear.)

Once you google that you should be able to find out its default IP address and the default username and password.

Lynksis is 192.168.1.1 and the user name is left blank, the password is admin.

Once in the GUI Just find the wireless setup tab and you should be able to change the SSID there, make sure to click on save.

If you do find an instruction manual or the defaults online for your Router and nothing you try gets into the GUI, you may need to reset it, just find the tiny little reset button put a pen tip on it while powering off and on the router. Then all of the default ip address and paswords should work to get the SSID changed.
