My lady-friend (also an expat) recently moved in with me. She brought her Sony Viao laptop with her to Singapore. It was running really slow (99% CPU usage). iTunes would hang.
I took it to work, and connected it to the 3Com router. I removed the "bloatware", I installed all the Windows 7 updates and then cleaned all the spyware. Now it runs much faster (6-20% CPU usage). iTunes works now.
I can not get the Viao to work with the internet connection in my flat. It will not connect to my Linksys router via Wifi. If I connect the network cable my router keeps resetting.
My Boxee, both my Linux boxes, and my Dell laptop work fine with my router. My wifi works just fine with both of our iphones, and my ipad.
What is the problem?

A. It seems that your computer is infected with Spyware. Simply scan your system and remove any unwanted programs. Also make sure you are using an Anti Virus, Anti Spyware, Anti Adware and an Anti Adware. Also make sure that you are using an updated firewall program. Windows Firewall is not effective all the time.

However, free usually has strings attached. But the exception is services that offer free just to get you to try their service, usually for limited trial periods.
Other services that offer free are often in Beta development phase and offer free calling as an incentive to acquire a user base. But free doesn't usually last forever.
Examples of free PC-to-Phone sources:

offers free 10 minute calls to USA, Canada, Australia, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, UK, Singapore. Call back as many times as you like after each 10 minute cutoff.
EarthCaller -
Completely free calls to anywhere in USA/Canada from your web browser. No catches. It is in beta dev cycle and is free as long as it is in beta dev phase.... enjoy while it lasts.

Is it possible for me to turn a free wifi connection into a "hard wired" connection?
Q. There are many businesses/coffee shops/restaurants near my home that offer free wifi. I can receive these signals on my laptop at home and they work fine. I have a desktop pc that is not wireless (and I cant make it wireless...long story) and I would like to be able to go online with it also. Is there a way to "capture" that wifi signal (with a router or access point, etc) and get the connection "hard wired" to my desktop pc?

A. Well, as long as you know one thing on the front end. You are violating a few laws and can be arrested for the practice! Just do a quick search for WIFI THEFT. Several have been arrested for just sitting and using available wifi - so you will be commiting a criminal act. (The reason, these places are providing free wifi for CUSTOMERS not for the neighborhood!) In the US, Canada, UK, AU, Singapore, and most other locations there are laws against illegally accessing a network, to connect to wireless you have to access a network.
To avoid all that, go ask one of the businesses if you can connect. If they give you permission, then you don't have an issue and can proceed with what follows.
Go get a Wireless Bridge. These devices are easy to setup and easy to install. They receive the wireless signal and send it to your computer over ethernet! Just what you need. Most have antennas that can be changed if you need more directional antennas etc.
