Aside from a power converter, I would say yes.. As long as there is an internet connection.

I need to use a portable hard drive as a type of file server using a netgear WNDR3300.?

The router is not connected to the internet. I have 4 computers that I want to be able to use the hard drive as a Z: drive on. I need to use it as a hot swap and storage location to share pictures between my computers. I've been trying for hours with no luck. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You could always buy a NAS.

If not just plug that portable hard drive into a computer then make sure all other computers are on the same workgroup and have file sharing on. Then just share that whole drive by right clicking it under my computer and going to the sharing tab.
After it is shared go to the other computers and go to my computer then tools at the top. Map a network drive. Go to the work group then find the computer name of the computer that has the portable drive connect to it. Then select the portable drive and then you can choose the name and Drive letter, in this case it is Z. Then on that computer under my computer the Z drive will show up.


If you need help with workgroup's just go to start, control panel, system then computer name tab.

Go to url bar and type in the router ip address 192.168.1.1, then
enter the default user name and password which is admin and password, respectively. If this does not work, take a paperclip end and depress the miniature button inside the pinhole on the back of the unit and hold it for about a minute. This may or may not power down the lights on the router, but in any case it will reset the router so you can then enter the url router address again and access the router software homepage where you can configure a user namee and wireless encryption. WEP is the easiest.

Any router can be made compatible, some are just easier than others. I have heard of some people having problems with this router though. I myself have had problems with netgear. If i were you, i would get a linksys (preferably) or a belkin. I know they are more money, but it is worth it.
