Netgear Faq: Netgear Fs105

Charles asks…

Netgear FS105 switch issue?

I am very good with computers, and I have tried many things such as restarting the modem and the switch.

I have this Netgear FS105, 5 port switch. My network set up is cable>modem> this netgear switch > then to my computer. Now I got another ethernet cord and plugged it into the switch then to my laptop. I was getting a connection but with limited activity. I could not connect to the internet. I tried switching the ports, switching cords amonst the 2 computers and I have come to the conclusion that it for some reason is only letting one computer at a time connect to the internet. I also have tried throwing in a different laptop and I am getting the same error every combination I try. Anyone know why this could be?

netgear answers:

In order to add multiple computers to your network, you need a router not a switch. Your ISP only assigns you 1 IP address for your connection. A switch passes that address from the modem to the computer. A router will accept that address and then using DHCP assign different addresses to the computers on your network.

netgear answers:

Probably not. That is only a switch. You need something to assign addresses with DHCP. Buy a router.

William asks…

Changing NAT settings on a netgear switch?

I have a FS105 Netgear prosafe desktop switch.
How do I access the switch's webpage?
If it doesn't have a page what do I do to forward ports?

netgear answers:

It doesn't have a web page. It is not a smart switch.

I think you are confused. It is a switch. Not a router, not a firewall. You do not forward ports with a switch. It does not share the internet etc.

If you are plugging it into a modem (cable or adsl) and using it to get the internet on multiple computers then you will need to login to your modems web page to setup port forwarding. This will usually be your gateway IP.
