Joseph asks…

how to login to a router NETGEAR?

i know theres an ip address to login to a router i forgot the password to my wireless and its so annoying, can i change the pw when i login to it

netgear answers:

To get into the router set up pages open your browser and type in either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 and this will take you to the router, for admin use admin and for password use password unless you have changed them, then click on wireless set up and your wep password will be on that page

I have static IP configured to my Netgear Router. In the router I have forwarded the port to my DVR . But ...?

the problem is that when I am accessing my static IP from anywhere I am comfortably able to login DVR and view the cameras, But sometimes it is not opening. Some one in the house should switch on some computer connected under that router open some website once, then again from outside I will be able to open the DVR again. ISP provider says session out problem means he says no activity from the router to gateway for more than some specified time then link breaks....Is it so if yes then what is the purpose of static IP?
I tried to ping my static IP from outside continuously. Some times it shows request timeout for intermediate period of about 10minutes or so and again it pings back....what could be the reason?
what modifications i should do in router.
the router is Netgear WGR614 V7.
Please guide me?

Are you sure your details are all correct? My friend had a similar problem, when really it all started because of a mistake in entering his details.

Help with router ip address....?

I have a cable modem and need to connect to a netgear vpn router. I've hooked up all the cables and it's like my computer doesn't know its there. My ip address doesn't match the router address & I can't login to the router address. How do I fix this? FYI, If you hadn't guessed already...I don't know much about this stuff, so the simpler the explaination, the better. Thanks so much!

netgear answers:

Let's review some basics

1. The internet feed comes to the modem from the ISP, a cable tv supplier (CATV) in your case..

2. The modem has an Ethernet port that should feed into the WAN port (sometimes called the Internet feed port) of the router.

3. I presume you have a static public IP address from your CATV provider. If not, you will have VPN problems if you are hosting the VPN; if you are connecting via VPN to another host (e.g. Your work place) you can have a dynamic public IP address.

4. You must configure your router's Internet or WAN port for the type if IP address (dynamic or static) that you have. If it is static, you manually enter the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS servers. Do not confuse these addresses with the private or LAN side addresses.

5. I suggest that, at least initially, you provide LAN IP addresses via DHCP and use a 192.168.x.0/24 subnet. In this case x can be any number from 0 - 254, and most often it is 0 or 1 for home networks. Being a 24 bit subnet, the subnet mask would be 255.255.255.0. I suggest you make the default gateway and router LAN IP 192.168.x.1. The x value for the subnet and router LAN IP must be the same. For a small home network, I suggest stating DHCP at 192.168.x.50 and runnng to 192.168.x.99. Make sure DHCP is activated on the router and there is no other DHCP server on the LAN.

4. On all LAN pcs, set the LAN configuration to obtain IP address and DNS automatically. I suspect you have static LAN IP addresses on your pcs and this is a major problem. After changing to dynamic IP, open command prompt (start, run - type in cmd in the run box and hit enter; then at the prompt type in ipconfig /release and hit enter; then type in ipconfig renew and hit enter. Then type in ipconfig and hit enter; you should have a LAN IP in the proper subnet and the default gateway is the router IP address. Now you have a functioning network.

5. If you plan to access via VPN a remote location and are using a VPN client on a pc, now try it. If it fails, the VPN config is in error and you need to reveiw this with the person who set up the VPN.

Netgear router with optimum online?

I have a Netgear WGR614v4 router and i have optimum online. I'm going to reset the router because i lost the router login and password. I contacted optimum online support and asked them for an internet service account login and password and they said i didn't need one? so can i just reset the router without writing ANYTHING DOWN? i'm new with computers and such so should i know anything like ip address or anything like that? this is to reset and set up my router.

netgear answers:

If you have Optimum online, you won't have to write anything down. Some ISP's that offer Cable Internet require a password to connect to the Internet, but Optimum does not. Every DSL connection requires a user name and password, though. You can reset your router without writing anything down.
