Netgear Faq: Netgear N300

Robert asks…

How can I speed up my Netgear N300 wireless usb adapter?

I have just bought a Netgear N300 usb adapter, which should run up to 300mbs. But is only running at 54mbs. I am using it with my desktop XP pc. Is there any way I can speed it up?
It's connected to a D-Link dsl 2640s 802.11g and Im not sure about my WAN speed.

netgear answers:

What is it connecting to? I'm guessing an 802.11g router/AP because 54mbs happens to be the the speed of g.

And what is your WAN connection speed? Probably a tenth of that.

Michael asks…

Will getting a Netgear N300 wireless USB adapter for my 3-year old laptop make my internet faster?

I was just given a Netgear N300 wireless USB adapter and would like to know if it will improve the internet speed and wireless range of my laptop because the new wireless adapter should be an upgrade from the one that came with my laptop 3 years ago. I am connected to a G router at home and use an HP Pavilion dv2000.

This is a mixed-bag answer -

If your internet connection is slower than 6 megabits per second, upgrading from wireless G to wireless N will make no difference in your internet speed, but will make a big difference with computer-to-computer communication (file and printer sharing) and streaming media throughout your home from a computer to a TV set-top box (like an AppleTV).

If your internet connection runs between 6 and 15 megabits per second, upgrading your wireless network from G to N may make a difference with your connectivity. However, you'll need to purchase a N router and N adapters for all of your wireless computers.

If your internet connection runs faster than 15 megabits per second, upgrading your wireless network from G to N will make a difference with your connectivity. You'll still need to purchase the router and adapters.

If you have gaming consoles with wireless network connectivity (PS3, Wii, 360, PSP, and NDS) you'll want to consider going with dual-band adapters for the computers from quality manufacturers (D-Link, Buffalo, Belkin, and Netgear) and a simultaneous dual-band router from either Apple, D-Link, or Netgear (Linksys dual-band N routers have overheating issues, even in the newer models). The dual-band routers will actually set up a pair of networks - one on the 2.4 GHz band for older G and B devices (game consoles) and one in the 5 GHz band for wireless N-enabled devices; single-band routers don't do this and wireless networks do run at the speed of the slowest active device.

Thomas asks…

installed a netgear n300 router but will only work for a minute then you have to restart?

we have wireless internet do I need to let ip know about it. works fine for a minute the it won't let the internet work. but shut it off then back on and works for another minute.

netgear answers:

Try a reset button of some sort. If not Try to change your computers IP address settings (IPv4) to DHCP. DHCP will give you a IP address AUTO. Letting your ISP will not matter, as they realy don't care whick routor you use.
