A. What is your card model? There might be Linux Based drivers for the chipset. For instance I have a PCI Linksys WMP110 which has the Ralink Chipset, so I installed the Linux Ralink driver and it works perfect.

Also it works with Kernel 2.6.34 + without drivers (same with the Linksys WUSB600N). If you can update your kernel to 3.6.34 (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-lucid/ ) that might fix the issue.

Install in this order:

[use the one that you need between 32bit and 64 bit]

Do I need to install all new Drivers for Windows 7?

To my eyes and needs, Windows 7 is just a fix to Windows VISTA and the door to 64Bit OS bec if you didn't know your Dell D510 motherboard and 32 Bit Windows XP cannot support more than 3.5GB memory.

What is the best way to upgrade the Linux Kernel?

Q. I was wondering what the most efficient way to upgrade the Linux kernel would be. I am currently using Linux Mint 9 which is a derivative of Ubuntu 10.04. Ubuntu 10.04 is using Kernel 2.32-xx and only seems to patch that Kernel when it comes down to upgrades. I have currently installed Kernel 2.34 via http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ , and installed in the order:

linux-headers-2.6.34-020634_2.6.34-020634_all.deb
linux-headers-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634_XXX.deb [i386/amd64]
linux-image-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634_XXX.deb [i386/amd64]

It seems to have worked, though Ksplice uptrack doesn't like it, which is a total bummer. The New Kernel has some awesome upgrades to it (http://www.h-online.com/open/features/What-s-new-in-Linux-2-6-34-1000122.html ), in fact with every new patched kernel that I upgraded to I had to modprobe and echo my Linksys WUSB600N to get it to work again with the Linux Drivers, or if that didn't work I had to reinstall the driver so that it was installed under the new header.

This time when upgrading to the new kernel, I didn't even need to configure or install the driver again.

At any rate I was wondering what are the advantages to installing the Kernel form source as to the way that I went?

A. A straightforward way to have Linux Mint 9 running off kernel 2.6.35 is by using the following method (based on my own configuration)

Open a Terminal and replace the Lucid repositories with Maverick repositories (Ubuntu 10.10 which is currently in development)

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

The default repositories list should look something like this

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ isadora main upstream import
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-updates main restricted universe multiverse

Wireless USB NIC disconnecting with drive state change?

Q. I have a Linksys WUSB600N USB wireless adapter.
Any time a drive changes state it disconnects the network. If I eject the cd-rom, unplug a USB device, right-click and eject the hardware from down by the clock, or even unmount a VIRTUAL drive, the network disconnects and then reconnects itself a few seconds later.

This question was asked on here before by another user, and the only answer that made sense had to do with reassigning internal addresses. Which I understand, however that doesn't explain what can be done to fix it.

I am running Win XP, hella powerful system, don't feel like listing it all.

Troubleshooting steps: reinstalled OEM drivers, downloaded newest drivers, uninstalled/reinstalled, countless reboots, swapped USB ports, etc, and happens on any computer.
Called Linksys tech support and all they could tell me was they would send me a new NIC. Which is fine since it happens on multiple computers which means it is most likely the NIC. ....but being a tech myself, that doesn't help much since it doesn't explain WHY it is happening....

Any suggestions?

A. Ew. It sounds like the USB adapter is overly sensitive to power fluctuations on the USB hub. I'd take it back and get a completely different brand or just buy a PCI wireless adapter instead.

Q. I purchased linksys wusb600n to try to work with an range plus n router. My old adapter kept getting huge lag spikes while gaming and just using the internet and I was told that it was because we got the range plus router and my old adapter wasn't compatible with it. I installed it and it connected with my old software 2wire but I kept getting kicked off the network so I unistalled 2wire and tried the software that came with it. It will now say i'm connected to the network but with limited or no capability I can't get on websites etc. I installed it on my laptop and it works just fine on the laptop and I can't get an answer from the linksys support at all no answer then get hung up on when I do get through. I am using windows XP on both my desktop and laptop. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to get it to work properly?

A. The message means that the adapter is waiting for an IP address to be assigned, but has not received it.
Possible causes:
1. Password for the network entered incorrectly - passwords are case sensitive
2. The connection is not set to obtain IP addresses automatically
3. The adapter is attempting to connect to the wrong router.
4. The driver is corrupted

I can't obtain a valid IP address, what's my next step?

Q. I need a networking guru!

My Windows 7 (64-bit) laptop will connect to the network but won't access the internet. Currently running a WDS on Linksys stock gateway and DD-WRT wireless client bridge. Gateway has a wireless MAC filter but the client bridge does not (this was working fine until 2 days ago).

All devices wired to the gateway are working right now. All devices wired to the wireless client bridge are working right now.

My laptop won't obtain the appropriate IP address automatically. I disabled IPv6, I checked IPv4 properties and it is set to obtain automatically. I released and renewed IP but no luck. Gone through command lines "netsh int ip reset reset.log", "netsh int ip delete arpcache", "netsh winsock reset", and finally "ipconfig /flushdns".... rebooted after each step... then did them all together and rebooted after that too. No luck.

I plugged in a second wireless adapter, Linksys WUSB600N, installed the right drivers and tried to connect, again no luck (Yes the MAC ID for the adapter was permitted on the network).

I've rebooted the modem, and the routers more than once. All other devices continue to work. I have not touched any QOS settings on any of the routers, although if this were working I might have later in the week.

My laptop is able to "tether" to a phone via wifi, using the built-in adapter. No fuss there.

I'm running out of ideas. Help?

A. Open menus, network connections and make sure the connections are enabled. This should eliminate the limited access and make it permanent. I do not understand people who play around with commands. The risk of messing the computer up is simply too easy. The only other thing that may need to be done is to reinstall your network drivers. If they are messed up you won't get it to work.

A. Sounds like your wireless adapter is being turned off for some reason. Check the properties of the wireless adapter and disable any "let windows manage the power" settings, so windows does not turn off the wireless adapter when running on battery (assuming it's a laptop). if this is a desktop, still check the power schemes, to make sure Windows is not trying to turn off the adapter.

Recently we had problem with internet connections and only WiFi was working on 3 Dell Notebook PCs (Latitude D800, Latitude D 620 and Inspiron E1505) so we can backup WiFi devices when we vacation and I decided to hookup & install Linksys WUSB300N USB adapter to Dell Studio XPS 435MT desktop and found out it would not work or install the painful way...so my research resulted in buying Linksys WUSB600N dual band WiFi USB adapter that does have 64-Bit drivers and it works on both 32-Bit and 64-Bit OS,

To my eyes and needs, Windows 7 is just a fix to Windows VISTA and the door to 64Bit OS bec if you didn't know your Dell D510 motherboard and 32 Bit Windows XP cannot support more than 3.5GB memory.

My Windows 7 (64-bit) laptop will connect to the network but won't access the internet. Currently running a WDS on Linksys stock gateway and DD-WRT wireless client bridge. Gateway has a wireless MAC filter but the client bridge does not (this was working fine until 2 days ago).

All devices wired to the gateway are working right now. All devices wired to the wireless client bridge are working right now.

My laptop won't obtain the appropriate IP address automatically. I disabled IPv6, I checked IPv4 properties and it is set to obtain automatically. I released and renewed IP but no luck. Gone through command lines "netsh int ip reset reset.log", "netsh int ip delete arpcache", "netsh winsock reset", and finally "ipconfig /flushdns".... rebooted after each step... then did them all together and rebooted after that too. No luck.

I plugged in a second wireless adapter, Linksys WUSB600N, installed the right drivers and tried to connect, again no luck (Yes the MAC ID for the adapter was permitted on the network).

I've rebooted the modem, and the routers more than once. All other devices continue to work. I have not touched any QOS settings on any of the routers, although if this were working I might have later in the week.

My laptop is able to "tether" to a phone via wifi, using the built-in adapter. No fuss there.

I'm running out of ideas. Help?

It stills shows that I have a strong signal. In the adapter properties IPV4 says no internet access. I tried the troubleshoot and nothing. I tried the command prompt ipconfig release and it says that it cant do it while the media is disconnected. If I try to disable the network adapter it hangs and doesn't do anything. Same thing if I try to restart or shutdown. It just stays on the screen where its says it shutting down or restarting. I have to actually hold down the power button to turn it off. Once the computer is on I'm able to surf again until the limited access happens again. I have even checked the properties of the wireless adapter and disable any "let windows manage the power" settings. Please Help!!!! I JUST BOUGHT MY COMPUTER NOT SO LONG AGO!!!!!! > <

A. Open menus, network connections and make sure the connections are enabled. This should eliminate the limited access and make it permanent. I do not understand people who play around with commands. The risk of messing the computer up is simply too easy. The only other thing that may need to be done is to reinstall your network drivers. If they are messed up you won't get it to work.

The New Kernel has some awesome upgrades to it (http://www.h-online.com/open/features/What-s-new-in-Linux-2-6-34-1000122.html ), in fact with every new patched kernel that I upgraded to I had to modprobe and echo my Linksys WUSB600N to get it to work again with the Linux Drivers, or if that didn't work I had to reinstall the driver so that it was installed under the new header.

This time when upgrading to the new kernel, I didn't even need to configure or install the driver again.

At any rate I was wondering what are the advantages to installing the Kernel form source as to the way that I went?

A. A straightforward way to have Linux Mint 9 running off kernel 2.6.35 is by using the following method (based on my own configuration)

Open a Terminal and replace the Lucid repositories with Maverick repositories (Ubuntu 10.10 which is currently in development)

The default repositories list should look something like this

A. Sounds like your wireless adapter is being turned off for some reason. Check the properties of the wireless adapter and disable any "let windows manage the power" settings, so windows does not turn off the wireless adapter when running on battery (assuming it's a laptop). if this is a desktop, still check the power schemes, to make sure Windows is not trying to turn off the adapter.

Q. I purchased linksys wusb600n to try to work with an range plus n router. My old adapter kept getting huge lag spikes while gaming and just using the internet and I was told that it was because we got the range plus router and my old adapter wasn't compatible with it. I installed it and it connected with my old software 2wire but I kept getting kicked off the network so I unistalled 2wire and tried the software that came with it. It will now say i'm connected to the network but with limited or no capability I can't get on websites etc. I installed it on my laptop and it works just fine on the laptop and I can't get an answer from the linksys support at all no answer then get hung up on when I do get through. I am using windows XP on both my desktop and laptop. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to get it to work properly?

A. The message means that the adapter is waiting for an IP address to be assigned, but has not received it.
Possible causes:
1. Password for the network entered incorrectly - passwords are case sensitive
2. The connection is not set to obtain IP addresses automatically
3. The adapter is attempting to connect to the wrong router.
4. The driver is corrupted

Can a usb wireless adapter help me connect to the internet using Linux?

Q. Right now I can dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux. My wireless card doesn't work with Ubuntu. So I was wondering, could I buy a USB wireless adapter and try to connect to a wifi network using that? If so what is recommended to get? And where could I get drivers for Ubuntu Linux?

A. What is your card model? There might be Linux Based drivers for the chipset. For instance I have a PCI Linksys WMP110 which has the Ralink Chipset, so I installed the Linux Ralink driver and it works perfect.

Also it works with Kernel 2.6.34 + without drivers (same with the Linksys WUSB600N). If you can update your kernel to 3.6.34 (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-lucid/ ) that might fix the issue.
