How to set up a WRT120N Router as a Repeater?

Q. Hello -
I was wondering how to set up a Linksys/Cisco WRT120N wireless router as a repeater.
I have a WRT400N and a WRT120N.
I did not choose these routers and I'm trying to make it work with what I have.

Any clear instructions would be useful.

A. Only way to do it is to find some 3rd party firmware. There is no repeater mode with the linksys firmware. I'm not even sure there is firmware available for it and if there is, this is not a task to be performed by someone without experience.

A. If you download torrents this can be cause by their nasty habit of leaving open unused connections to peers and filling up your max amount of connections. This can be resolved by going to your router's GUI in your browser and find the TCP timeout setting. Change it to 300 seconds and that should fix the issue.

You also need to ensure that you are running the latest firmware for your router, here I got you a link.

You update it by going to your routers GUI in the browser and find the page that says update firmware or something like that. It will allow you to choose a file. Just choose that one you downloaded.

Also if this doesn't fix your problems I need to a know a little more. Are you connected to the router wirelessly or wired. If it's wireless, next time you loose connection grab a cable and connect directly and see if the router has lost connectivity to the internet or if you have just lost wireless connectivity to the router.

A. Actually...

There's a way to do this. Some versions of the Linksys WRT54G can run an alternative, open source firmware called "DDWRT". Once you've gotten DDWRT running in your old router, you can program it to run as a range extender or repeater.

Of course, it will only operate in 802.11g

It's not without risk. Make a mistake with the firmware load, and you can "brick" your old router. Read and follow the instructions to the letter.

How do I connect a Linksys router to a Belkin router as an access point?

Q. Okay, I have two routers. One is a Linksys WRT120N (I also have a WRT54G2 V1 if the current isn't compatible...) and I also have a Belkin F5D7230-4 router. The Linksys is connected to my cable modem and has good enough signal for all of my downstairs, but my upstairs has little to no connection in certain places (MY ROOM for example!!) so I'd like to configure the Belkin router to be used as an access point or repeater. Keep in mind that there is no wired connection in my upstairs so I need to configure it as a repeater that won't be hardwired to the original router. I'm willing to update to 3rd party firmware or anything if need be. I don't care if it's something that will potentially brick my router or void the warranty, if it will work...please help me do it! Q. Ok, My question is why my wireless USB Belkin won't switch to Network N and i check the specifications, and settings. Turns out It is compatible with Network B, G, N. So I switch my wireless network type to Network N-Only. After that it's still using Network G on my Computer. Is there an option that i can manually switch my wireless from G to N? I hate when they say is for compatibility.

A. Have you updated the firmware in the router and the drivers for the adapter? If not do those two things first. For nearly since the beginning there are compatibility issues between various N units. Many routers and adapters were released as "pre-N" before the standard was complete. Any of those devices will have issues. New "drivers" were supposed to correct issues but in many cases it didn't. If devices simply don't connect at N speeds they do "fall back" to G. Yes, i updated the firmware and tried all 3 of those channels. They will not connect to the network at all. I have to restart the router to fix it, it doesnt go away on its own. There are no other networks in range and no cordless phones. I am not sure if the devices are N or G adapters.

I bought this router to replace a Netgear DSL router so I could utilize the faster Time Warner Roadrunner service. Right off the bat, I can say this thing was a piece of cake to set up and the Wi-Fi coverage is the best I've ever seen. It easily outperforms the Netgear on that front. Other positives--the Cisco Connect software makes it easy to perform basic router functions (check for new firmware, renew IP address, reboot the router, etc), add new devices, access and set Parental Controls and more, right from my Kindle Fire or other mobile devices. Another nice little bonus: the ability to modify friendly device names.

Throughput on this thing is great... via Speakeasy Speed test and the integrated speed test in the Cisco Connect software--I'm consistently getting around 20Mbps... even higher in some cases. Nice to see I'm getting what I paid for.

Only thing I can't weigh in on are third-party apps and the Cloud Connect software that's due out later this summer. Those future capabilities are something I was willing to pay more for. But even without those, I can easily say I highly recommend it based on my experience in the last several days with this router.

Q. I have internet from AT&T (not U-verse) and was using a silver Motorola modem with a Linksys WRT120N router until my modem broke down and I had to get a replacement. The new modem I got is an Actiontec GT701D. I resetted my router and installed my new modem, but the wireless from the router doesn't work anymore. The way I have everything connected is that I have both my modem and router connected to my desktop. I had to use the PPPoE setting for my modem and my router is currently using the DHCP setting. I'm able to access the internet from my desktop, but I can't use the wireless internet from my laptop or iPod. Router firmware is 1.0.07 and modem firmware is 3.0.4.1.4.

When I check the connections on my laptop & iPod I do see the connection SSID from my router, but I am unable to connect to it. I'm also able to see the properties of both my modem and router when I type in the IP addresses into my desktop (so both are being recognized from my desktop). Can anyone help me hook up my wireless again? I've been at this for hours now. Thanks.

Looks like (if supported) PPPOA is prefereable to PPPOE.

There are also two styles of connecting an adsl modem and seperate router - Bridged, where the modem hands off everything to the router.
DMZ, where the modem handles the protocol stuff and the router is connected to it like a PC.

Honestly, it would be much better to have an ADSL router with wireless, the one-piece solution is a lot less trouble

NB. It's unclear from the modem details, but possibly turning off NAT in the modem settings may turn it from a router (yes, it's a 1-port router that can connect an ethernet hub), into a simple modem that would work seamlessly with an external router.

Alternatively, a basic throw together setup: (not bridged)
1. Make sure you router assigns a different DHCP address range from the modem - if the modem is a 192.168.0.1 device, then the router could be 192.168.1.1.
Alternatively, if the two are in the same range, you will need to set DHCP off on the modem.
2. Connect the router to the modem.
2a. Different IP range - set the address the router is given by the modem, as the DMZ on the modem
2b Same IP range, set the WAN IP address on the router to be an address which is in the usable range, but outside the set allocated by DHCP, then set this as the DMZ on the modem.

Unless the device in front of the router behaves as JUST a modem, it gets VERY awkward!

How can i fix my router?

Q. I have a linksys Cisco wrt120n router and its been dropping my computer and xbox from the network every 30-60 seconds. All my mobile devices ipod phone etc all work flawlessly. Any ideas?

A. If you download torrents this can be cause by their nasty habit of leaving open unused connections to peers and filling up your max amount of connections. This can be resolved by going to your router's GUI in your browser and find the TCP timeout setting. Change it to 300 seconds and that should fix the issue.

You also need to ensure that you are running the latest firmware for your router, here I got you a link.

You update it by going to your routers GUI in the browser and find the page that says update firmware or something like that. It will allow you to choose a file. Just choose that one you downloaded.

How do I connect a Linksys router to a Belkin router as an access point?

Q. Okay, I have two routers. One is a Linksys WRT120N (I also have a WRT54G2 V1 if the current isn't compatible...) and I also have a Belkin F5D7230-4 router. The Linksys is connected to my cable modem and has good enough signal for all of my downstairs, but my upstairs has little to no connection in certain places (MY ROOM for example!!) so I'd like to configure the Belkin router to be used as an access point or repeater. Keep in mind that there is no wired connection in my upstairs so I need to configure it as a repeater that won't be hardwired to the original router. I'm willing to update to 3rd party firmware or anything if need be. I don't care if it's something that will potentially brick my router or void the warranty, if it will work...please help me do it! I've read everywhere that it's supposed to be this oh-so-easy task...but uhh...I'm not having very much luck!

I went to the cisco site and they told me to update the firmware and change the router's channels, but it continues to do the same thing.

Yes, i updated the firmware and tried all 3 of those channels. They will not connect to the network at all. I have to restart the router to fix it, it doesnt go away on its own. There are no other networks in range and no cordless phones. I am not sure if the devices are N or G adapters.

I bought this router to replace a Netgear DSL router so I could utilize the faster Time Warner Roadrunner service. Right off the bat, I can say this thing was a piece of cake to set up and the Wi-Fi coverage is the best I've ever seen. It easily outperforms the Netgear on that front. Other positives--the Cisco Connect software makes it easy to perform basic router functions (check for new firmware, renew IP address, reboot the router, etc), add new devices, access and set Parental Controls and more, right from my Kindle Fire or other mobile devices. Another nice little bonus: the ability to modify friendly device names.

Throughput on this thing is great... via Speakeasy Speed test and the integrated speed test in the Cisco Connect software--I'm consistently getting around 20Mbps... even higher in some cases. Nice to see I'm getting what I paid for.

Only thing I can't weigh in on are third-party apps and the Cloud Connect software that's due out later this summer. Those future capabilities are something I was willing to pay more for. But even without those, I can easily say I highly recommend it based on my experience in the last several days with this router.

Wireless router range problems?

Q. I have the linksys WRT120N. I bought the N router because the G I had didn't give me enough range. Thing is, the N didn't change much on range either. It gave me a stronger connection within a pretty close range, but after that it was pretty bad. My router is approximately 25-30 meters away from my TV area. Router on second floor, room on first. It goes through a floor and a wall, but in general, that should still be okay. I wasn't bothered with it for a while, but now i'm considering getting an xbox and I want the wifi connection. So I was testing it out, and I brought the laptop progressively closer to the TV area, along the way I kept testing the internet connection with an online speedtest. And the connection was pretty strong all the way to the TV, which is farther than I've ever gotten. Then about 5 minutes later, the connection dies, it doesn't show up anymore. I walk back about 10 steps, and it works again. Is it maybe the way I set up the router? Or settings I can change? I didn't get an N router for such crappy range.

A. I use a WRT160N and the only way I could get optimal range increase is by making it transmit at 40Mhz rather than 20Mhz. (firmware downgrade)

Wireless transmission channel of the router can have a massive effect on the range too, depending on how many other people in the area are using the same channel.
